Little, Brown and Company release
Little, Brown and Company to publish a new book by Colonel Chris Hadfield featuring photographs from the International Space Station

Reagan Arthur, senior vice president and publisher of Little, Brown and Company, announced today (April 24) that Little, Brown has acquired rights to publish a new book by former astronaut Chris Hadfield featuring photographs from the International Space Station (ISS). YOU ARE HERE: Around the World in 92 Minutes will be in bookstores this fall. Literary agent Rick Broadhead of Rick Broadhead and Associates completed the deal.

"Chris Hadfield's new book, YOU ARE HERE, encapsulates his singular eye for our world as it appears from above. We first fell for his photographs over Twitter, and now we have the chance to see the earth with startling freshness in these hand — selected shots from the thousands Chris took on board the International Space Station. Chris's new book is full of beauty, whimsy, and a keen sense for the planet we share," said vice president and executive editor John Parsley.

Divided by continent, YOU ARE HERE represents one (idealized) orbit of the ISS. This planetary photo tour — surprising, playful, thought-provoking, and visually delightful — is also punctuated with fun, fascinating commentary on life in zero gravity. In the spirit of his bestselling An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, YOU ARE HERE opens a singular window on our planet, using remarkable photographs to illuminate the history and consequences of human settlement, the magnificence (and wit) of never-before-noticed landscapes, and the power of the natural forces shaping our world and the future of our species.

Chris Hadfield is one of the world's most seasoned and accomplished astronauts and the author of the #1 international bestseller An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth. The top graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School in 1988 and U.S. Navy test pilot of the year in 1991, Hadfield was selected by the Canadian Space Agency to be an astronaut in 1992. He was CAPCOM for twenty-five Shuttle launches and served as director of NASA operations in Star City, Russia, from 2001–2003; chief of robotics for the NASA Astronaut Office in Houston from 2003–2006; and chief of International Space Station operations from 2006–2008.

Hadfield most recently served as commander of the International Space Station, where, while conducting a record-setting number of scientific experiments and overseeing an emergency spacewalk, he gained worldwide acclaim for his breathtaking photographs and educational videos about life in space. His music video, a zero-gravity version of David Bowie's "Space Oddity," received over ten million views in its first three days online. His TED talk, delivered in March 2014, drew more than one million views in its first three weeks.

Little, Brown and Company is a division of Hachette Book Group. Founded in 1837, Little, Brown has long been recognized as a publisher committed to publishing fiction of the highest quality and nonfiction of lasting significance. Hachette Book Group is a leading trade publisher based in New York and a division of Hachette Livre, the third largest trade and educational publisher in the world.

(As with "An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth," Random House of Canada will publish "You Are Here" in Canada. Per Amazon, the book is due Oct. 14, 2014.)

  1. I have the greatest respect for Col. Hadfield and his accomplishments in space. I'm proud as a fellow Canadian too.

  2. We need ambassadors for crewed spaceflight and I'm thankful for his use of social media, his book(s) and his personal appearances. It takes a lot of hard work to do these things also.

  3. BUT you can't disagree that Chris, his passions and his desire to be in the spotlight resemble another, older astronaut. Therefore, with a great deal of respect for both men I christen him Buzz Hadfield.

I would not presume to know Chris Hadfield's motives for his active media blitz other than what I presume to be his enthusiasm for telling his story and trying to excite people about spaceflight, science and the Earth. He has done a brilliant job on that score.

I will note one difference between he and some others. Free as opposed to $100, $200 or $600 signing fees. I know most others have signed for free in the past for book signings as well. But that's the distant past I think.

Are they all photos taken by Hadfield? Taken during his mission? Or more general ISS photos from a variety of missions and astronauts/cosmonauts?

Edit: Just re-read the first post. They are photos he took, himself.

After seeing his stunning photos on Twitter I was expecting a large coffee table-style book but the Amazon UK listing has been updated and states dimensions of just 15x21cm (approx. 6"x8"). Seems awfully small for a photo book and smaller than his 'Guide to Life on Earth' book! Interestingly neither the Amazon US or CA sites have dimensions listed.

I pre-ordered but think I might wait to see if it really is that small...

UPDATE: I contacted the Canadian publisher who said:
"Yes, we've gone with a unique size YOU ARE HERE 8 inches by 8 inches here in Canada."

Interesting that the Canadian publisher states a larger size than the UK (but it still seems small!).

UPDATE 2 : The UK publisher Macmillan have told me:
"The dimensions should be 235x235mm"

That's approx 9" square - the plot thickens...!

I bought this book from iTunes. Note this book is not formatted properly for Apple's iBooks. The photos are not sized properly and do not take advantage of modern tablets' high resolution screens. The text does not flow naturally — overall this conversion to an electronic format has been done very poorly. Here are some screen grabs from the book showing these formatting issues.

Hadfield 1

Hadfield 2

Hadfield 3

Disclaimer: I have published several photo books on iTunes.
