At Thursday's X-STEM Extreme STEM Symposium held in Washington, DC were various "scientist trading cards" which were either handed to attendees, or in my case, left on a table. The cards pictured various speakers, including six astronauts: Tom Jones, John Grunsfeld, Alvin Drew, Kathy Thornton, Bernard Harris and Anousheh Ansari. I do not know if more cards were issued for the speakers the remaining days, such as Brian Duffy. Nor do I know the population of how many cards were distributed in total or how many cards individually were distributed (e.g., if there are some "uniques" or "rares" among the bunch.) Nor do I know how many cards make up a set. I do know that I was able to make only one complete set, getting them at the first talk I was registered for at 10:40 a.m. I have most of a second set, missing Grunsfeld. The six astronauts were surprised to see that the symposium had made cards out of them, and with the exception of Grunsfeld and Jones, signed them. They were extremely popular with kids (who made up most of the attendees) who wanted an autograph but didn't have a photo or book or other suitable item for their signature. |
