From a BIS posting on an appearance by backup astronaut Richard Farrimond (Wood's backup on 61H): With a background in the British Army and having undergone space flight training at NASA, Richard has a unique view of the UK's haphazard association with human space flight. After occupying a senior position with Astrium, Richard is now retired. Having recently completed a thesis on this very subject, he has written a book on this subject, which will shortly be available from the BIS and has a foreword written by Helen Sharman. On this unique opportunity to hear what it was like to go through selection and the shuttle astronaut training process, and how he has tracked and been privy to the vagaries of government attitudes to human space flight in the decades since, Richard Farrimond will talk about his experiences, his view of the UK’s new and welcome involvement with human space flight and about why he wrote this book. Now that's a book I'd love to read! |
