The Soviet Union named its last space station Mir, meaning both "peace" and "world" in Russian. The first module of Mir was put into orbit in 1986. Other modules were added until it was fully assembled in 1995. Hundreds of cosmonauts and astronauts visited Mir before it was de-orbited in 2001.

This book is the first in a series of chronologies of the assembly and use of the Mir Space Station. Volume I describes events that happened from Mir's conception up until November, 1994. It begins with an extensive, up-to-date history of the Soviet manned space program. It then provides a detailed chronology of the assembly of Mir modules, and the arrival and departure of supporting spacecraft (Soyuz, Progress, etc.).

Graphic diagrams are used to show which spacecraft are docked to what modules during specific dates. The arrival and departure of astronauts and cosmonauts are chronicled, as are other events in Mir's history.
