This weekend my wife convinced me to go to a rummage sale with her -- and now I'm glad I did. Bought a box of books (for $15) that contained the following: - APOLLO: The Lost and Forgotten Missions by David J. Shayler
- In Their Own Words: Conversations with the astronauts and men who led America's journey into space
- Astronautics and Aeronautics 1970
- STARFALL by Betty Grissom
- Murder on Pad 34 by Erik Bergaust (1st ed.)
- Gus Grissom: The Lost Astronaut by Ray E. Boomhower
- Rendezvous in Space by Martin Caidin (1st ed.)

This past Saturday, I was in Half Price Books and I looked through the astronaut section for any books I don't have. While I was there, I was opening books I already have. One of the books I opened was "Lost Moon." On the title page, I saw Lovell's uninscribed signature. I looked at the cover and it said $7.99. Naturally, I bought it.In the past I've found a Sy Liebergot and a Gene Kranz signed books from the same bookstore. I'm always on the lookout for signed books at Half Price Books. Has anyone else found a bargain while searching a used bookstore, or even a garage sale? Editor's note: Threads merged. |

I found a signed copy of Jerry Linenger's "Off the Planet" a few years ago for $7 in a second-hand book store in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. |

Found a fair copy, with dust jacket, of '10:56:20 PM EDT 7/20/69' published by CBS News and containing Walter Cronkite's signature for $1.00 at Strand bookstore in NY. Also a pristine set of the book and six-LP record set from Time-Life of 'To the Moon' for $5.00 at another used bookstore. |

At Half Price Books I found a first edition "Moon Shot" signed by Alan Shepard. They were asking $120. I asked if they had a COA. They did not. She said she looked on line and said that it looked real. I said I did not feel comfortable paying that much without paperwork. I ended up walking out of the store with the book for $40. I know it is real. I love this hobby! |

I have found many copies of Jim Lovell "Lost Moon" signed and signed bookplate from $5.99 to $12.99, Edgar Mitchell 5 Copies "The Way of the Explorer" Signed $9.99, Jim Irwin Signed Uninscribed "To Rule the Night" $14.99, Wally Schirra "Schirra's Space" Signed $8.99, I always see Jerry Linneger's Books Signed for $6.99, Gene Kranz's Book Signed and Uninscribed $5.99, Charlie and Dottie Duke "Moonwalker" Signed by Both $25 and Gene Cernan "Last Man on the Moon" 5 copies over the years for $5.99. I have also seen terrible prices at Half Price Books like John Glenn "Memoirs" Signed $99. I picked up a box of books at an auction back in 2002 for $45 and in it had 20 NASA books and Buzz Aldrin Signed and Uninscribed "Men From Earth. The box also contained a Medical Book (Anatomy) from 1929 which I sold on Ebay for $250. Our Library has a biannual sale of used books and I have picked up Chuck Yeager's Biography signed and uninscribed for 50 cents, Adolf Galland's book Signed for 50 cents. Goodwill in July I found an Jim Lovell Lost Moon Signed and Moonshot bookplate signed by Alan Shepard both were 50 cents each. A bookstore in Wichita back in 2005 I found Tom Stafford's book signed by both Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan for $15. There are great deals out there just have to be willing to look. |

Just last weekend I stopped at a huge rummage sale in the Cleveland, Ohio area while driving back from boating on Lake Erie. I picked up a box of about 100+ vintage Apollo NASA documents and photos! Some of the docs are one page flyers, others are lengthy technical documents, schematics, several large charts, a few red-serial numbered photos and several flight plans. What caught my eye was the Apollo 11 final flight plan sitting on top of the box which was labeled "Photocopies of NASA documents." Most have the typical rusty staples and many have hand written notations, but those in the know understand that these are not your typical modern photocopies. I was told the box was priced for the value of the original photos (including an Aldrin visor red serial #) and the charts and that there was an autograph of an unknown astronaut in the box. I have yet to find that autograph, but I bought the whole box for his asking price of $25! There are still bargains to be found! |

I guess you know that the red numbered Aldrin visor shot in perfect condition will probably sell for upwards of $500. A bargain indeed!  |

Rummage sales and garage sales are great, but in the hot weather getting in and out of the car ten times wares me down at my age (70). I prefer thrift shops (particularly those run by the Salvation Army) and local church sales. Church sales are the best because they will deal with you and most items are $1.
Last weekend I went with a friend to the annual tag sale at a local church. I looked through the books and found no space books. There were no space toys. I went to the "Free" table, which was mobbed. So I looked under the table for items that would not fit on the table. To my surprise, there was a box marked "FREE". It was very heavy. When I opened it I saw hundreds of postcards. I took the box. It contained postcards from around the world, including China, Japan and even Cuba. When I got home I determined that the box weighed 8 pounds. Among the cards was one space item. It is a 4-page stamp stock book from Russia containing 20 Russian space stamps. The stamps are great, but it is the folder that got my attention. It was probably the only space item at the sale. I bought many items at the sale, but the box of postcards from under the FREE table made the trip worthwhile. |

By far the best space book that I found at a thrift shop was in 2011. I was browsing a thrift shop on Second Avenue in New York City and found a hardcover copy of "Prelude to Foundation" (science fiction) by Isaac Asimov (1920-1992). Since I had met Mr. Asimov at a Space Spectacular sponsored by the IASP at INTERPEX in 1982, I purchased the book for $2. Later I found that it was signed and dated (1988). I later sold the book on eBay for $65. |
