I have emailed the publisher to inquire about a possible English version of this book - but it's Sunday!

Lune
by Olivier de Goursac
Foreword by David Scott and James Garvin

Who has not dreamed of walking on the moon?

For the first time, we finally have the book that shows you what astronauts have really seen on the Moon. After a careful selection, the best pictures both black and white colors have been specially cleaned and processed to deliver their finest details and the most true colors. Olivier de Goursac, space images processing specialist, provides you with the result of more than 3 000 hours of work on the original photos from NASA. And the result is incredible: the Moon as if you were there, without visible distortions on the published photographs, with images corrected of all their faults that appeared on the original pictures! In addition, many shots were assembled to build panoramas. To obtain a better merger, Olivier de Goursac patiently even removed the crosses on the photos to show you what the astronauts saw really behind their helmet by turning the head. The pictures finally reveal all the fine details. The moon has never seen as beautiful, fascinating landscape, its desert dust as strange and far from Earth.

Visit the moon, as if you were on board the cabin and the Apollo lunar module. See for yourself the incredible landscapes that have been explored by these intrepid travelers from outer space. The Moon is the territory of the latest adventure experienced by man.

Foreword by Dave Scott, captain of Apollo 15, and Jim Garvin, head scientist of NASA, Moon is a world first. After the success of Visions of Mars, Olivier de Goursac offers a new invitation to travel and dream. Now imagine that you are an astronaut!

I've got competition! - and we're probably reading the same French forum!

(As for a US version of the book, publishers have shown interest; that's all I know for now.)

And because it's XMas today, here are some nice desktop wallpapers taken from the LUNE ("MOON") book to be downloaded.

Scroll down the page and then:
  1. Connect to http://jpmastro.myftp.org/
  2. then select the "lune-odg" folder;
  3. enter "lune" as login and "moon" as password'
  4. select the folders "lune-1280x1024" or "lune-1440x900", depending the size of your computer screen;
  5. you can retrieve the desktop wallpapers (and to save time they are also put inside a "zip" file down the list).
Please note that this ftp site is only accessible between 08:00am and 11:00pm French time (EST).

Here's the English version of the book:

Walking on the Moon: A New Photographic Experience of the NASA Lunar Explorations by Olivier de Goursac

"Enjoy this treasure... it is timeless and enduring—for it is doubtful that humans will again, for decades to come, collect in situ photographs of the moon and its beautiful features." - David Scott, Commander, Apollo missions 9 and 15

Walking on the Moon features beautifully restored photographs of the Apollo missions, the result of years of painstaking effort by Olivier de Goursac, a world-renowned specialist in space imagery. De Goursac viewed all eighteen thousand photographs taken during the Apollo lunar missions, selecting images, assembling panoramas, and, for the first time ever, correcting each photograph for perspective and color. The result is a visual record that is as close as possible to what the astronauts really saw on their historic voyages. Never released before in the United States, these breathtaking photographs reveal a new wealth of detail experienced previously only by a select group of astronauts. Walking on the Moon invites viewers to walk alongside the astronauts and discover the moon’s mysterious landscapes.

Born in France, Olivier de Goursac is a widely recognized specialist in space imagery. He is often asked by NASA scientists to use his imaging skills to produce moon, Mars, and planetary images for official presentations. He acts as outreach manager for Mars automatic missions of the French section of the Mars Society. De Goursac is the author of Visions of Mars.

James Garvin is scientific director of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

David Scott was commander of Apollo missions 9 and 15, and the first person to drive on the moon in the lunar-roving vehicle.

Who knew Dave Scott was commander of Apollo 9? Not even Dave Scott!

Obviously, the French Amazon.fr website is having the good statement (they only mention the Apollo 15 mission) and my copy of "LUNE" in French states it good also: Dave Scott is indeed CMP for Apollo 9 and CDR for Apollo 15.

Knowing Amazon they may have adapted themselves their text from Amazon.fr.

The good statement about Dave Scott is now online on the Publisher's website.

And with also plenty of amazing desktop wallpapers to download from the "Walking on the MOON" book! Enjoy.

Thanks for that Chris. I had noticed it had been delayed but wasn't sure of a 'new' shipping date.

My Gawd, those are pretty pictures. Thanks for pointing this one out. I've asked Amazon to notify me when it's available.

Finally some news about this - although I still remain skeptical (it's been 2 years) because no updates from the US publisher (they stopped answering my emails) and I even tried the French one to check with them if they had any info.

Amazon.co.uk lists the book for November 30, 2011 release.

That book keeps popping up on Amazon.co.uk as a pre-order.

I've tried several times to contact the US publisher and even the French one to obtain any info as to the availability (or not) of this title. No response. I'm assuming it's dead and buried.

I've asked on a French forum if anyone knows how to contact the author, Olivier de Goursac. Or maybe we can even try Dave Scott. Can cS members help out?

I'd really like to have a definitive answer as to the availability of this publication.

This book is not going to see the light of day. The ISBN had been reserved for publication in 2009 but the crisis affecting the publishing sector has killed it. Nothing is being planned.

Why not just get the French-language edition? I have the French version too and I didn't buy the book for the text. The photos are the most important part to me...

I do have the French edition. But as I wrote above, the English edition keeps appearing on Amazon as if it is going to be up for sale. Now we know it's not true. That's all.
