I've been thinking about making a fake mission patch for the 1986 "Space Camp" movie 'mission.'I had originally posted questions on when the filmed Flight Readiness Firing (FRF) for the movie took place, but I now realize it must be the September 85 FRF in anticipation for it's first mission. Just curious if anyone would be interested in a fake mission patch for the film? Maybe a play on the 51J patch with Jinx instead of Lady Liberty? |

I am almost certain as well it was the Atlantis FRF in 1985 before STS-51-J. I believe a lot of the footage used in the movie shows Atlantis on the wing. It's still vivid to me after all these years. I probably watched the movie on HBO every time it came on during the summer of 1987 when I was 16. I thought Jinx was neat, but annoying. I would be interested in the patch as it would take me back to my youth. Rudy's the best on the RMS. |

I went to Space Camp for the first time last September with the adult program (I'd only been waiting 30 years to go). The thing that got me was when we introducted ourselves at the start, only two other people in my group were older than me, yet most of us said the original 1986 movie was a big reason for wanting to go, even though few of them could have seen the movie in the theaters originally.I think that movie was a bigger influence on space fans than most purists would like to admit. I know a few people currently at JSC who've said seeing the movie made them want to work for NASA, too! |

Some of the scenes at the USSRC were filmed during August, 1985. You can see a STS-51I crew pic in a display which featured the next shuttle mission. When I attended in July, 1984 the pic displayed was of STS-41D. |

Unless the patch was for the FRF, I'm not sure it would make sense (after all, they didn't know in advance that they were launching).I suppose it could be a post-flight patch, created to commemorate the mission they inadvertently flew. |

Yeah, I was either thinking of the FRF patch or like you said, a patch after the fact. I think there's enough interest in the 1986 movie that people might want one just as a guilty pleasure...

So are you going to contact Fox for permission to use the characters or logo from the film? |

I'm going to use a new design with the 'crew' last names and maybe a outline of Jinx, maybe not even that. There's no copyright to violate if I go with the elements I have in mind. |
