I have published a short eBook on the Space Shuttle's thermal protection systems in Apple's iTunes store. It's for iPad only (no iPhone yet) and is FREE. Easy to find by searching for Space Shuttle.

The book uses photos courtesy noted cS photographers James Brown and Robert Pearlman plus scans by Ed Hengeveld. Some of the technical text is taken from NASA's book Wings in Orbit (used by permission). My goal was to distribute the work of that great book to a wider audience, specifically high school age kids.

Here's the cover. Author's name in blue denotes Version 2. If you somehow get Version 1 (white name) let me know.

Here's a screen grab on the Tile Densification section.

I already have ideas for Version 3 - please download and let me know your comments.

A PDF version is available that plays on all formats and devices but for some reason it came out at 75 MB. If you want that send me a private note. Thank you.

Indeed, excellent work Gary. I was happy to contribute a photograph and really admire the design and layout of the book. Very clean.

I've added it to my reference material and have no reservations recommending others do the same!

Excellent job Gary. I do have one question though. Why does your ebook only work in the horizontal mode on the iPad and not in the vertical one as well?

Thanks for your note. I could not figure out how to make the book automatically reformat for the vertical position so locked the book into horizontal or landscape format. Before doing this, turning the tablet vertical made all the formatting go crazy.

A review has popped up on iTunes from a person well known to these forums.

If you have any interest in the details of the Space Shuttle heat shield ... and
there are MANY parts to it ... you will find this book very enlightening! Few of the public are aware of the complexities of this system. To get what was basically an aluminum machine through a 3000 degree F reentry required some revolutionary technology. You can read about it here. Great reference material!

Version 3 of this book has now been released. The book has been doubled in size and includes more examples of artifact collections, flown tiles and thermal blankets, an instrument used in tile installation, additional postal cachets and future uses of TPS technology.
