Former shuttle astronaut Mark Kelly and his wife, retired Arizona congresswoman Gabby Giffords, appeared on a segment of CBS's Sunday Morning program yesterday (March 15). They talked about the long recovery from the wounds Giffords suffered in January 2011 after a gunman opened fire, killing six people at an event she was hosting for her constituents.Giffords, who was interviewed with Kelly at their home with her service dog and preparing for a cycling event, appeared strong and answered in a clear voice. When asked where he was when Giffords was undergoing surgery for her injuries, Kelly responded that at that exact moment he was at the controls of shuttle Endeavour, preparing to dock with the space station. When asked whether Giffords was worried about her husband during his flight, she said yes. Both are now working toward gun control legislation and more stringent background checks, especially at gun shows. When asked about either Giffords or himself seeking public office, Kelly replied: "Never say never, (but) under the right circumstances I might consider it." | |
