In a message received just today from Springer Books in New York, contracts are being officially awarded for two new books I have already been working on for a number of months now. They are separate books on the two Mercury-Redstone suborbital flights of Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom.

Obviously there have been biographies published on both men, but apart from a couple of books published straight after Shepard's flight, no one has actually published books dealing exclusively with these first two Mercury missions.

The books have the working titles of:

  • Freedom 7: The Historic Flight of Alan B. Shepard, Jr., and:

  • Liberty Bell 7: The Suborbital Mercury Flight of Virgil "Gus" Grissom.
I expect to have the manuscript on the Shepard flight ready for presentation to the publishers by September, and the Grissom book some six months later.

I will definitely be seeking assistance on certain aspects of both flights from collectSPACE members later on, but it's good to be back in the writing saddle once again on two books that I believe are vital additions to the complete story of human space flight.

Yet some more books eagerly awaited from you Colin. It's going to be a vintage year.

All times are CT (US)
