Can you tell me if exists a book in which are published in color these wonderful drawings of spacesuits?A version, small size and black and white, are in "US Spacesuits", but does there exist a better version, in color and large size in another book? And who is the author? |

I'm guessing, but could these possibly appear in a small hardback book by Kenneth Gatland, probably published in the early 1970s? I have a copy somewhere, but it's buried deep in a box in the attic somewhere. |

I thought the same thing, so I dug out my copy. They're not in there. The style is very reminiscent of the Gatland drawings though. |

"US Spacesuits" includes the following in its Editorial Notes: The illustrations without acknowledgements were created by Thomas J. Reddie, who produced detailed depictions of suit models to show layers of suit systems, design evolution and permit comparison features. Without his artistry, many models would have been depicted by crude design sketches or photographs of flat, lifeless, incomplete or tattered surviving artifacts. |

Just happened across this thread, this morning. I am the illustrator who did those space suit illustrations for U.S. Spacesuits by Ken Thomas and Joe McMann. Glad you enjoyed them!Recently, a 2nd edition was published which included color through a good portion of the book. Fortunately, the majority of those suit illustrations made it to color within the limit of pages allowed for color reproduction. They are still the same size however, due to the quantity of spacesuits, so they do not hold the detail of the original illustrations. That having been said, they are a combination of sketch line work with color overlays, so if viewed full size have a sketch style to them, rather than a super precise rendition. This was perfect for the book, since they were so small on the pages. Curiously, I was brought in on the project as a result of contacting Ken Thomas for research on my OWN book about the Apollo EMU (A project of mine that is still in progress). Many of the sketches I was using as identifiers for my own personal use were included in U.S. Spacesuits, although they were never originally intended for reproduction. It worked out great however, especially due to the sheer volume of suits Ken and Joe required. | |
