ESO has two superb books in the works: Europe to the Stars The Jewel on the Mountaintop Soon available for ordering via the ESOshop.

I contributed to Appendix 1 (ESO telescopes 1962-2012) and can confirm is profusely illustrated with great color photos and panoramic views. The book will become available as a PDF download.
