Excellent programme on behind the scenes at NASA showing how they are planning to land a manned craft on Mars. It concluded that it probably could be done within a decade if countries collaborated and the huge cost was met but very unlikely in that timescale.
Man on Mars: Mission to the Red Planet

Horizon goes behind the scenes at NASA to discover how it is preparing for its most ambitious and daring mission: to land men - and possibly women - on the surface of Mars.

It's over 40 years since Neil Armstrong made the first human footprint on the moon. But getting to the red planet would involve a journey of at least three years.

Horizon meets the scientists and engineers who are designing new rockets, new space suits and finding ways to help astronauts survive the perils of this long voyage.

And it turns out that having the 'right stuff' for a mission to mars might not be quite what you expect.

After watching Horizon last night I doubt I will live to see humans on the red planet? NASA were talking about a landing in 2033 and although I'd only be 73 then I can't see it happening until much later. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong?

Chris, you should be so lucky being only 73. I'd be 86! Still I am fortunate to have been a month under 23 when they first landed on the Moon and in my prime! An unforgettable time.

In reality we won't see humans on the red planet soon, even a "one-way" mission is very difficult as no space agency has the hardware to perform such a mission. Believe me, probably by 2069, the Apollo 11 centennial, there might be hope to see humans departing to Mars...

Let's set our minds to a manned mission to the moon in our life time.
