Hubble 3D to Reveal Unprecedented Views of the Universe in IMAX Theatres Starting March 19, 2010

Audiences to Accompany Spacewalking Astronauts as They Perform the Final Upgrade to the Hubble Space Telescope

IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures announced Sept. 8 that Hubble 3D will be released exclusively in IMAX and IMAX 3D theatres worldwide beginning March 19, 2010, with expansion to additional IMAX locations on April 23rd, timed to the Hubble Space Telescope's 20th Anniversary.

The IMAX 3D camera, which flew onboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis, captured stunning 3D images of the intricate spacewalks required to service the telescope during the most recent mission last May. Shot by the STS-125 astronauts, this intimate look at the complexities of repairing the telescope will put IMAX audiences right there along-side the spacewalking astronauts. Hubble 3D will combine this awe-inspiring IMAX footage with breathtaking up-close imagery of distant galaxies, the birth of stars and planets, and more — revealing the cosmos as never before.

"We have waited a long time to get the IMAX camera back into space and finally the opportunity came with the amazing final repair mission of the Hubble Space Telescope," said Toni Myers, director, producer and editor of the film. "In Hubble 3D, audiences will be able to float in space alongside the astronauts as they perform the repairs and upgrades to the telescope, and then fly to the edge of the universe, through its first new images. On Wednesday, September 9th, NASA unveiled the first images from the newly refurbished Hubble Space Telescope.

Launched in 1990 and greatly extended in its scientific powers through new instrumentation, the Hubble Space Telescope has validated Lyman Spitzer Jr.'s original concept of large, space-based observatory orbiting far above the distorting effects of the Earth's atmosphere. In Hubble 3D audiences will come to understand the profound significance of the greatest scientific instrument since Galileo's original telescope and how it has forever changed both our view of the universe and of ourselves.

Hubble 3D is an IMAX and Warner Bros. Pictures production, in cooperation with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The film reunites the Space Station 3D filmmaking team, led by producer/director Toni Myers. James Neihouse, director of photography, also doubles as the astronaut crew trainer. Judy Carroll is associate producer, and Graeme Ferguson, co-founder of IMAX and pioneer producer of many IMAX space films, is executive producer.

Leonardo DiCaprio to Narrate IMAX 3D Space Film Hubble 3D

Warner Bros. Pictures Inc. and IMAX Corporation today announced that three-time Academy-Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio will narrate Hubble 3D. The latest IMAX 3D film from the award-winning team behind Space Station 3D and other successful IMAX space films, led by producer/director Toni Myers, is scheduled for release to IMAX theatres beginning March 19, 2010. Hubble 3D will combine awe-inspiring IMAX 3D footage shot in space with breathtaking, never-before-seen 3D flights through Hubble imagery from the Orion Nebula to the far reaches of the cosmos. The film is the fourth IMAX 3D co-production between the two companies.

Leonardo DiCaprio most recently earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for his leading role in Sam Mendes' acclaimed drama "Revolutionary Road." His numerous honors include three Oscar nominations, the first in 1994 for his work in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," followed by "The Aviator," in 2005, for which he won the Golden Globe, and "Blood Diamond," in 2007. DiCaprio's additional credits include the Oscar-winning films "Titanic" and "The Departed." He will soon star in Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" and in Christopher Nolan's "Inception," both set for a 2010 release.

Following its March 19 debut, Hubble 3D will open in additional IMAX locations on April 23rd, timed to the Hubble Space Telescope's 20th Anniversary.

Air and Space Museum rolls out red carpet for Hubble 3D premiere

The star of the Warner Brothers' new IMAX film "Hubble 3D" was missed Tuesday evening at the movie's world premiere at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum but for good reason: it was orbiting 350 miles above Earth.

The Hubble Space Telescope's absence notwithstanding, the celebration saw the film's co-starring astronauts walk the red carpet to see for the first time the telescope's "life story" unfold on the museum's five-story screen...

[Hubble 3D] ranked No. 20 on the box-office list last weekend, grossing about $411,000 in just 39 theaters. We're not just talking here about No. 20 for movies that usually play at science centers and museums. We're talking about the big-time list: "Hubble 3D" nearly beat out "The Hurt Locker," which won the best-picture Oscar earlier this month. It made more money per screen than that other 3-D movie, the top-grossing "Alice in Wonderland."

The rest of my family thoroughly enjoyed it also and I think the fact that they have a familiar voice narrating (Leonardo DiCaprio), it makes it even more interesting for people not all that interested in space.

The film, which initially debuted on March 19th and has launched in 55 domestic and 15 international IMAX locations thus far, has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The synthesized "galactic fly-throughs" I suppose combined multi-spectral imagery and distance data (?) and were well done. Our 16 year old left saying "nothing will ever seem big again" - I'll remind him of that quote next time he's feeling full of himself
