From artists Sue Corke and Hagen Betzwieser:  This image is imprinted with the smell of the moon as described by Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke and designed as a scent by flavorist Steven Pearce at Omega Ingredients, UK. It is really a strong smell. It has that taste -- to me, gunpowder -- and the smell of gunpowder, too.
Charlie Duke, Apollo 16 astronaut, 1972  Moon, Scratch and Sniff is a commission for the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and was launched there as part of an event on olfactory art in September 2010. The print is a forerunner for a new installation planned for 2011. Further details to be announced. Prints available now from Edinburgh Printmakers, and the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh from December 2010. On Thursday, NASA's Deputy Associate Administrator for Communication Bob Jacobs tweeted: The makers of "Moon, Scratch and Sniff" sent a couple to our office. Mine now smells like it has a fireplace. |

Right... But what's even more intriguing to me, is that somebody would buy a print to see what "spent gunpowder" or what "wet ashes" smell like. Believe it or not, I know a more economical way to experience the same phenomenon. |

Daily Mail: One small sniff for man: Artists create posters 'that smell like the Moon' 'Flavourist' Steven Pearce took Duke's description as well as scientific reports of the make-up of the moon's surface, to come up with the scent, which was then converted in a laboratory to an ink for the £35 prints.They are now being sold as 27 x 17cm artworks through Edinburgh Printmakers - as the creation of printers Sue Corke and Hagen Betzwieser and their partnership called 'We Colonised the Moon'. The pair have made 300 limited edition Moon prints, while seven larger prints are available for £270 a piece. Makers of the scented prints promise buyers will have the authentic smell of the Moon in their home for a whole year. |

...how do you know how the moon smells when you've hot a helmet on your head? Especially when you wear a EVA suit which is completely closed?!!?! Too much gunpowder, I guess. |

The moonwalkers' suits, especially on the later missions, became covered in moondust. When they reentered the lunar module, they tracked the dust back into the cabin. Inside, they removed their helmets... (read more here) |
