20+ years ago, I used to loan a book from the local library. It was a reference book on spacecraft and rockets and was illustrated with drawings and artwork rather than photographs. If memory serves correctly, it was compiled by an author with a european-sounding name.

I have no other details but I wonder if it might have a familiar ring in anyone's mind.

Would appreciate any help identifying the book.

The only book that comes to mind based on your description (drawings rather than photos and one that I have!) is Rockets of the World, 2nd edition (1995) by Peter Alway, published by Saturn Press.

Possibly one of Kenneth Gatland's books?

"The Pocket Encyclopaedia Of Spaceflight In Colour: Manned Spacecraft" or "Missiles And Rockets"?

I still have the 40 year old copies that inspired me as a kid!

Could it be "The History of Space Vehicles" by Tim Furniss? It has information and pictures of 'rocket boosters, space shuttles, lunar modules, satellites and space stations'.

Thanks for the replies so far, but no it's not any of those. I do in fact have some of those already. I've even tried searching the online library database from where I used to loan the book to no avail.

The author's name might have been something along the lines of "Giovanni"? But I'm not having any luck on Google with that.

Thanks Jim, I do believe that is the one I am thinking of. There are few images of it online but I think you might have cracked it. Thank you! (And thanks to everyone else too, amazing work!)

I have a large hardback book called "The Encyclopedia of Earth Satellites" by Giovanni Caprara published 1986 which is richly illustrated with 450 drawings and some what look like airbrush paintings, there are no photographs except for a few pages in the back appendix. It claims to describe every satellite since 1957 until its publication.

I have another called "Into Space" again a large hardback beautifully illustrated book without photographs published 1986 with about 13 contributors all with Italian sounding names except for John Hodge.

One of the contributors is Francesco Carassa and illustrated by Gigli so I strongly suspect it is the same book Jim suggested, under a different name. Its nice to have an excuse to go hunting through the old stuff.

I think the book you are talking about is a 1971 Knowledge Library book by David Mondey. The name of the book is Rockets and Missiles. There is one for sale on the Association of Air Force Missileers site for $15.00.

All times are CT (US)
