I spoke with MSNBC's Alan Boyle earlier today as he was preparing an Apollo anniversary book round-up for his blog, the Cosmic Log.
That's one small step for a man ... and one giant stack of books for the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

The pile of new publications about NASA's moon effort, timed to anticipate the anniversary on July 20, has been rising so high that Robert Pearlman, editor of the CollectSpace Web site, had to clear out his bookshelves this week. "I now have stacks of older books sitting around my office," he told me today.

It's Pearlman's job to keep track of the memories and the memorabilia surrounding space missions, and even he is impressed by the breadth of offerings being released this year. "Each of them is slightly different - they're not just telling the same story over and over again," he said.

...there are plenty of other potential additions to your bookshelf. Whether you're a space fan or a comic fan, a youngster or an armchair historian, there's an Apollo book to suit your fancy. Here's a list of the latest and greatest hits, compiled with Pearlman's assistance.

Other than the above book list, which other publications did you find with special articles dedicated to the first manned lunar landing?
  • Sky At Night Men On the Moon issue
  • BIS Spaceflight July 2009 issue

For French-speaking folks, here's a special issue from weekly magazine "Le Point".

In local libraries that have them, a monthly publication, BookPage, the newest edition reviews "Rocket Men: The Epic Story of the First Men on the Moon," "Voices from the Moon: Apollo Astronauts Describe Their Lunar Experiences," "Apollo: Through the Eyes of the Astronauts," "Spacesuits: the SMithsonian National Air and Space Museum Collection," "Tom Sachs: Space Program," and Buzz Aldrin's "Magnificient Destination." With Mike Wimmer's "One Giant Leap" illustration on the cover!

The Guardian has published a number of articles on Apollo 11, as well as a collection of photos. Thought people might be interested.

Did anyone in the UK or Ireland pick up 'The Times' newspaper today as there was a 20 page souvenir booklet all about Apollo 11 and it included an in-depth interview with Buzz Aldrin - if you still have the chance to pick it up, do, as it is an excellent read in my opinion!

Anyone know where to buy USA Today's Weekend Magazine which has a feature on the cover for Apollo 11 40th Anniversary? I've checked at Barnes & Noble and Borders with no luck.

Well, I figured out the answer myself so I thought I would share that USA Weekend magazine is a supplement to newspapers on Sunday across the USA. Here's the site for the listing of papers that carry it.

So this Sunday will be the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 cover.

For those of you living in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut areas, today's (Sunday 7/12/09) Newsday (local newspaper with a Long Island focus) has great coverage of the anniversary of the Moon landing. The cover has a great shot of the Earth taken from the surface of the Moon titled "From LI to the Moon." Short story in the main section regarding the spin-off of space related technology. Also contains a great 23 page anniversary supplement with a strong focus on the development of the lunar module.

Just wanted to let folks know that EETimes, one of the leading industry magazines for the electronics industry, is publishing a digital-only special edition on Apollo with an emphasis on the technology and engineers/controllers behind the program. The issue will be available Monday, July 20th, and some cS luminaries are among those who helped with their time for interviews (Sy Liebergot) and content (Scott Schneeweis, John Fongheiser). A public 'thank you' for your help gentlemen.

For those with an interest, you can click here.

Some of you may enjoy the forum comments there too and I'm sure there are some great stories to add for those who care to join in.

Sorry about the gated access; I'm a contributing editor at EETimes and was part of the team that put the issue together but registration is outside my sphere of control and part of the 'free' trade-publishing industry business model where advertisers foot the bill.

A DVD has now been issued by the BBC called "The Sky at Night, a Night to Remember". This is hosted by Sir Patrick Moore and I quote "through the painstaking reassembly of historic videotape, clips and sound archive, together with original NASA footage of the mission, 'A Night to Remember' relives the momentous epoch in which man went to the moon." As well as the mission footage (including Buzz Aldrin's filming of the interior of the LEM) there are many clips of James Burke (remember him!). He visits the "blast room" under the launch pad, sits in a command module and does a "striptease" in a lunar spacesuit (though he doesn't quite do the full monty.

This is available from the BBC website.

Time Magazine's cover story for the week of July 27 was "40th Anniversary of Apollo 11: Moonstruck":

While in the UK, I was struck by how many books had different covers to their US versions -- and how many covers were very similar around the Apollo 11 anniversary time.

All times are CT (US)
