Can anyone tell me something about the origin of the authentic cloth pieces that are on some of these astronaut cards from the Panini 2010 Century Collection? What are these pieces cut from? |

It look a while to find an example of the back of a card to see how the swatch was described, but for example, a Scott Carpenter card's material was described only as "an authentic item personally worn/used by Scott Carpenter."No where does it indicate that the material flew in space or was even used while Carpenter was at NASA, so it could just be a shirt or other piece of personal clothing that Panini purchased and cut apart (the card states that the swatch was "obtained and... guaranteed by Panini America, Inc."). |

There are a number of these up for auction. Some of which have a signature as well as the stamp/swatch. Anyone care to weigh on the desirability of these as space collectibles? |

I own a few of them and the backs of them say the same thing as the Carpenter, Robert. Nothing from any specific event but they appear to be a cotton-like material from a collared 3-button shirt. |

I have bought quite a few of these and yes they are just an old shirt they cut up (nothing special). The ones that are signed are the same card as the unsigned ones and they add a sticker with their signature on it. I find it amazing that they sell these in a box of 6 cards for $200 with a chance to find a nice piece. The best astronaut is the Alan Bean signed card. This is just another form of gambling, you are better off just buying the cards you want. Most have been going for less than $5 for the shirt cards and the signed ones $40. |

The astronaut signed cards are not on stickers. Looks like the autograph is on a plain white card along with a vintage space stamp. The whole thing is then inserted in a die-cut display.Other non-astronaut signed cards are on stickers. The signers include Walt Cunningham, Rusty Schweickart, Al Worden, Edgar Mitchell, Charlie Duke, Gene Kranz, Alan Bean, Sally Ride, Hoot Gibson, Bob Crippen, Barbara Morgan, Fred Gregory, Ed Gibson, Bill Pogue, Vance Brand, Kathryn Thornton, Richard Gordon, Scott Carpenter, Eileen Collins |

I bought a Century Collection signed Scott Carpenter stamp card with a swatch of cloth in it. I know the cloth isn't space related but does anyone know what the cloth is? How about any of the others who are in the set? Any help appreciated! Editor's note: Threads merged. |

I have a couple of Panini cards from Skylab astronauts. The stamp included is the one of the Moon Rover. The card is such that the stamp is adhered to a plain white card but exposed. Does anyone think it would ruin the card's value if that stamp is carefully removed and replaced with a vintage 10 cent Skylab stamp? |

A simple update to my last post. The back of the cards give the Scott's Catalog number for the vintage stamp displayed on the front. Clearly a bad idea to swap out a lunar surface stamp for the Skaylab stamp even on a Skylab astronaut's card. |

I've got some good information from one of the astronauts involved with the cards.The material in the cards is all from astronaut worn material. None is flown material. Most is even modern era from jackets or shirts worn at astronaut events such as astronaut encounter or charity golf outings. One very interesting fact and something I did not know is some of the money raised by creating these cards was donated to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. So cash does go to a good cause and in the case of the signed cards you are assured of having an authentic signature.

I have it from one of the astronauts included in the cards the material is from current day clothing that was worn at least once. His was a shirt worn once.I do not believe any of the swatches are from flown or even on Earth training clothing. Novelty cards only.

So I'm looking at the "Astronaut Relic" cards from the Americana line and I'm seeing material cards for the likes of Gene Kranz, Alan Bean, Al Worden, Eileen Collins, etc.The cards themselves only say that the material is guaranteed authentic but not where it's from. Assuming that it is, in fact, authentic, does anyone know what we're talking about here? Anything of significance, like something they wore around in their NASA days (or, in Gene's case, maybe one of his vests) or just a piece of a shirt that they wore to their nephew's barbecue one time in the 90s?
