Director Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee's new short film "Earthrise" tells the story of the first image captured by astronauts of the Earth from the moon in 1968. Told solely by the Apollo 8 astronauts, the film recounts their experiences and memories and explores the beauty, awe, and grandeur of the Earth against the blackness of space.This iconic image had a powerful impact on the astronauts and the world, offering a perspective that transcended national, political, and religious boundaries. Told 50 years later, Earthrise compels us to remember this shift and to reflect on the Earth as a shared home. "Earthrise" will be available Nov. 19 on POV Shorts and available for streaming on pov.org. Following this release, the film will be available on The New York Times website through the newspaper's Op-Docs series. |

Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee presents his film in its entirety as part of The New York Times' Op-Docs forum. I've always loved the Earth photography captured during the Apollo missions, and the "Earthrise" image is particularly poignant for me. In all the tellings I watched or read of Apollo 8 — and there are many — I wanted to experience more. I wanted to know the story behind the photograph, to know what it was like for the first human beings to see and experience Earth from space. | |
