The last time I saw Andy Chaikin he mentioned that he was working hard on this new book.

From the Amazon listing, it appears that the publication is set for October 2008. I am sure it will be a great book!

Is it a "coffee-table"-type book like Chaikin's last ("Space")? That's what Abrams seems to specialize in.

Thanks!

Andy Chaikin has a done it again. His passion for space exploration is heart-felt and evokes inspiration through a lens of history, science and curiosity. Chaikin manages to blend the best of human vision (such as Ray Bradbury's or Arthur C. Clarke's science fiction) with human achievement (from Mariner to the rover projects).

Discover how Wernher von Braun, Tom Paine, Carl Sagan, and a whole host of lesser-known, yet equally significant people imagined, planned, and implemented missions to explore a crimson, unique world.

This book captures the intense drama of the quest for Mars and the people that envision the exploration of a beautiful red planet (with glorious photographs to prove it). Chaikin has blazed a trail for the future of space exploration. An absolute delight. Andy Chaikin's passion is contagious.

Superb hardcover edition with 279 glossy pages telling the Mars exploration story from Percival Lowell to Steve Squyres. Excellent and rare color photos (Leighton, Sagan, Murray, Soffen, Lee, Mutch, Hibbs, Malin, Theisinger, Manning, Garvin...).

As best 2008 book on Mars-related unmanned spaceflight = a must-have!

Thanks for the heads up Robert. I can also recommend his audio interview on The Space Show, which was excellent and made me buy the book!

I just saw the talk by Andrew Chaikin on his book. He was very informative and a great speaker on the subject of Mars. I hope to get this book for Christmas. If I get a B&N gift certificate, this is the book that I will buy.

Does the book mention the Mars-3 USSR spacecraft at all? This was the first spacecraft to soft land on Mars, but it stopped transmitting after only 1 photo of the surface. This was years before the Viking landers (1976).

Here’s an interview with the author.

More Mars books and science fiction books on Mars.

Mars III was launched in May 1971 and landed on the red planet Mars on 2nd December 1971. The Russians did get a line of about 20 seconds of TV signals, showing barely any contrast...

Here is a link to information related to the Mars 3 mission and images.

For those who already have "A Passion for Mars." is there any mention of the Mars 3 spacecraft?

This book is already available on eBay.

Well, Christmas is over and I received several space related books, but not "A Passion for Mars."
