USS Hornet Museum release

Apollo 11 40th Anniversary - 2009 Calendar

Just in time for the holidays, the USS Hornet Museum has created a unique 2009 calendar featuring Hornet's participation in the splashdown and recovery of this great adventure. Includes rare photos that provide an inside view of the world-famous event that took place on July 24, 1969, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

This collector's item is available only from the USS Hornet Museum while quantities last, priced at $14.95 plus shipping and handling.

To ensure you receive a copy, pre-order online or call the Ship's Store at 510-521-8448 x245.

Proceeds benefit the educational programs of the USS Hornet Museum, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and a registered State and National Historic Landmark.

I received my copy today, and can highly recommend it. The photo reproduction is nicely done, and some of the photographs really knocked me over. Some of them are kind of familiar (Nixon addressing the astronauts, for one) but there's a few pictures I had never seen before -- for instance, a really dramatic, close shot of "Old 66" over a boilerplate CM during a SimEx. Wow.

I'm fairly certain a few of the photographs inside, despite their captions, are from Apollo 12 and not Apollo 11 (I believe the cover photo is from a sequence I know well taken while the ship was enroute for Apollo 12, and markings differences on "Old 66" tip me off in others). However, this is by no means a bad thing; it's kind of a bonus, when you think about it.

If you love the splashdown end of things as much as I do, you'll enjoy it.
