SpaceShipOne: An Illustrated History
by Dan Linehan
Foreword by Arthur C. Clarke
In April of 2003, a company called Scaled Composites lifted the veil of secrecy from a longtime research program and introduced SpaceShipOne to the world. And the age of commercial space travel took off... like a rocket. This book chronicles the development of the world's first commercial manned space program -- a program that includes an airborne launcher (the White Knight), a space ship (SpaceShipOne), rocket propulsion, avionics, simulator, and full ground support. With ample illustrations, photographs, and behind-the-scenes information, SpaceShipOne provides a full picture of this classified project--from the conception and design to the deals that brought together Scaled Composites' Burt Rutan and Virgin Airlines' Sir Richard Branson to the plans for building a fleet of commercial suborbital spaceships and launch aircraft.

The story of SpaceShipOne combines the adventurous spirit of Charles Lindbergh, the entrepreneurial drive of Howard Hughes, and the urgency of the space race at the height of the Cold War. Author Dan Linehan, who was there at the launch, lets readers in on the drama and details behind the making of spaceships that will take twenty-first-century tourists to the final frontier.

About the Author
In 2004, Dan Linehan attended the launch of SpaceShipOne when it captured the X Prize. He has written numerous articles about aviation and space for periodicals like Pacific Flyer and In Flight USA. Linehan was the editor and principle feature writer for the California International Airshow's event program in 2003-2005. He has a background in physics and engineering. Dan Linehan lives in Monterey, California.

Michelle Evans of the Orange County Space Society has let me know the southern California talk and book signing tour schedule so far of Dan Linehan, author of SpaceShipOne: An Illustrated History.

They are listed on Dan's website events page.

Unfortunately, I didn't know this in time to alert people here to the DC events happening today and yesterday, but I understand that more events in California and elsewhere will be added to the page as they are confirmed.

I saw this book two days ago in a Barnes & Noble store in greater Sacramento, CA. Flipped through it and determined it is a good book to have in one's space library.

It was a pleasure to meet Dan Linehan yesterday at the Orange County Space Society meeting. He is very knowledgeable and the book and show he gave for us was excellent.

I recommend the book - he covers the X-15 and lifting bodies contributions as well as the Shuttle program's contributions to Burt Rutan's research.

Great color shots!

My friend Dan Linehan, who covered the SpaceShipOne program from start to finish, wrote the most detailed book about SS1 out there and for those who don't like to read, it's loaded with 200 great photos.

Dan has been doing book signings around the country at Oskosh, NASM, Barnes & Noble and now AIAA is hosting his presentation of the SS1 program in Los Angeles near LAX on August 21st.

Dan has put a ton of work into this book, he had virtually unrestricted access to the Scaled facility and staff during the program and it's the most comprehensive book written on SS1.

If you're interested in the SS1 program, this is not to be missed and Dan puts on a fascinating and very enjoyable presentation.
