60 Minutes: First Man (November 6, 2005)
Format: NTSC
Availability: This item is currently not available
DVD Release Date: June 15, 2006 This must be the TV Show "60 Minutes" and approximately 20 minutes dealing with Neil Armstrong's life. Anybody know for sure? Would be great if this is the full interview. |

Not sure where that text came from but I just emailed a producer/friend at CBS in NYC. The response was that 60 Minutes does not sell segments on DVD in retail? |

Looks like that is about to change.If you just do a search on Amazon for 60 Minutes, you'll see pretty much all of last year's stories come up as individual DVDs. And all with a release date of 6/15. Looks as though they are DVD-Rs as a way to make available the previous year's stories on DVD. |

Being in the UK I have never heard of 60 Minutes. Can you tell me more about the programme, format, etc? |

60 Minutes is a long running news magazine type of show, probably the first on American Television. It usually has 3-4 feature stories and has aired on CBS on Sunday evenings for as long as I can remember (at least through the 60's). Some "on-air" names associated with show over the years include; Dan Rather, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley and of course Andy Rooney. |

After further review, it is true! 60 minutes are releasing previously aired segments for retail sale, including their piece on Armstrong with extra footage. Mark, you were right and this apparently was news to the newsroom! |

Just got a copy over the weekend. It is indeed a DVD-R. The disc contains the entire show, not just the Armstrong segment. In this case it works out because the other 2 segments are pretty good. One bummer though, it dips to black for minutes at a time during the commercial inserts, not sure if why they didn't edit these out. Also, no chapter breaks. enjoy! |

Where did you get it? If it's only available from 15th June, how did you get it? Is there a web-site where it can be ordered? (I have just spent 15 frustrating minutes checking the 60 Minutes site. Absolutely nothing remotely connected to Neil Armstrong. Mind you, I'm using dial-up. |

Amazon.com still shows the release date as June 15 and no ability to pre-order before that. |

I'm not sure if its one and the same, but the CBS store offers 60 Minutes "videos" (with no details as to the format) with the "First Man" episode listed for $29.95.(The above link takes you to the catalog for November 2005 episodes, you then must use the drop down menu and scroll to November 6, select the episode and click on 'add to cart'.) |

I got my copy from a friend who is a producer for 60 Minutes II. After reading Robert's post and looking at the 60 Minutes' store, I think the copy I have may not be the retail version. It looks like they have broken them out by segments for $29. The first four in that drop-down are from one show (First Man, Airport Road, The Winner, Rooney Milk) but some are unavailable. I am now as confused as everyone. I guess we will see on the 15th. |

I don't know if this is the reason... but...They may not be available for pre-order because Amazon has a service (that we don't use) where you don't have to keep stock - they run off DVD-R copies as they are ordered, so they fulfill orders from a master you supply, and the seller doesn't have to maintain inventory. Sometimes Amazon's system does strange things with inventory issues. As I said, I'm not sure that the 60 Minutes stuff is connected to this service, but since they are DVD-Rs, then they are run through a similar arrangement, if not through Amazon. If you purchase a DVD-R (or +R for that matter) I'd make a few backups (if you are able) as there have been some issues with both compatibility and longevity. |

Note to anybody who pre-ordered this item on Amazon before now. It was originally offered at full price of $17.95. Now it is on offer at 30% off or $12.56. I just went into Amazon and cancelled my exiting order and placed a new one. Hey, it's five bucks! |

I just browsed around Amazon and this DVD 60 Minutes - First Man (DVD - 2006) is still being offered as a very bad DVD-R with an edited 14 Minutes segment of an Neil Armstrong interview. How can this be that we all are denied the full uncut interview of the first man on the moon? To top it of I believe the owner of Amazon is a space freak and entrepreneur. How can he still sell this 10 cents DVD-R for this outlandish price. The reviews tell the story some people cannot even get it to play. That's really sad. Who can we contact to demand the full uncut interview on a "normal" DVD format? It's about time! |

The interview belongs to CBS, they are under no obligation to ever release it, in any format. Attempts to have them release it at the time of the broadcast were met with resistance, as intellectual property is considered valuable in the media trade. |

I don't see CBS trading it anywhere. So where is their gain? The interview is in the TV vault and nobody makes a buck. CBS would make a killing selling the unedited full interview on proper DVD. True? |
