Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin and illustrator Wendell Minor have a new children's book coming out next year, following up on their 2005 New York Times best-seller, "Reaching for the Moon".

"Look to the Stars" (Putnam Juvenile, ISBN # 0399247211) is due out April 16, 2009 as a 40 page hardcover.

A Google search doesn't reveal much more information (e.g. no cover art yet), but Aldrin mentioned the book in an interview with MSNBC's Alan Boyle:

We are awaiting final production of "Look to the Stars," another children's book coming out in April. So I am quite involved in things that stimulate young people to look at the reality of history, and how well it was carried out in the past.

Courtesy artist Wendell Minor, we're very happy to host the debut of the cover art for Buzz Aldrin's "Look to the Stars":

Buzz Aldrin takes readers on a journey through the history of space exploration.

As one of a handful of astronauts to have walked on the moon, Buzz Aldrin has a unique perspective of space. And he serves as an amazing guide as he introduces us to the pioneers of space. From Copernicus to the Wright brothers, from the Apollo program to dreams of future travel, he reminds us that mankind has always looked to the stars.

Buzz's informative, kid-friendly text is paired with beautifully detailed illustrations by renowned illustrator Wendell Minor, and offers the perfect introduction to everything space-related, including the development of the first rockets, America's space race with Russia, details of all the Apollo missions, and the space station.

Aldrin and Minor collaborated on the bestselling Reaching for the Moon and now they reach beyond that book to give readers a concise look at the whole history of space exploration. Each spread provides a wonderful jumping-off point for young readers, and will no doubt inspire them to look to the stars themselves.

-- G.P. Putnam's Sons, August 2007

Since the beginning of time, humans have looked to the moon and stars with great wonder. Some even dreamed of traveling into space -- I know I did! But space travel was still science fiction during my childhood; only comic book heroes like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers blasted off into space. Going to the moon or Mars was something only they could do, or so we thought.

When I was a boy, I admired my dad's achievements as a pilot. Our house was filled with photos from many of his friends who were among the great aviation pioneers of their time -- including a picture of the Wright brothers signed by Orville Wright and a signed picture of Amelia Earhart christening the two-engine amphibian plane that my dad flew for Standard Oil of New Jersey. I flew in that very plane at the age of six! My dad's love of flying became my inspiration to look to the stars.

2009 marks the fortieth anniversary of Apollo 11, when Neil Armstrong, Mike Collins and I traveled to the moon. Neil and I were the first to walk on its surface. Let's look back to where this journey began, and then look forward to where it might lead.

-- Buzz Aldrin
According to Putnam, Aldrin and Minor will embark on a two-week national tour to promote the release of "Look to the Stars" on April 16, 2009.

Coincidence to publish this during the International Year of Astronomy 2009

Beautiful work! I hope to be able to have the time to do the art for a book when I grow up (read: retire).

I really like Mr. Minor's artwork. He and Buzz are a good match. I'm looking forward to having the book in my hands. There's something about "children's" books that stimulates the imagination like grownup books can't.

Not yet; based on past tours, I wouldn't expect to see any details until after the new year. That said, when dates are known, they'll be sure to be posted here.
