I was wondering how many others out there collect uncorrected proof copies of astronaut-related books and what ones you have in your collection?

I have an ARC of "Encounter with Tiber," signed by Buzz Aldrin.

The funny thing is to find out the differences (from the blurb on the back and packaging, not going through the whole book!) with the 1st edition.

I don't know how you would go along with collecting such books (let alone why — enlight me!), but I have a copy of "Light This Candle" that is incomplete (the footnotes are not indicated, although listed at the end), so I don't if it falls into the Uncorrected Copy category.

This is a topic near and dear to my heart, as Rick (JoKepler) knows. I have a large collection of astronaut-authored books' advanced reading copies, galleys and uncorrected proofs.

As to the how and why, while the first edition of a book is often considered the most valuable by collectors, before there can be a first edition, there are uncorrected proofs circulated to editors and colleagues for review. Finding these "galleys" can be difficult as they are limited by publishers to small runs (sometimes, less than 100 are printed).

Beyond that, you can sometimes find additional stories (if not complete chapters) that have been excised from the final published book by editors.

The "how" is much more difficult to explain but it involves eBay, used booksellers, garage sales, estate auctions, and if you have a valid reason to do so, direct requests from the publisher.

I recall that my copy of Tom Staffords book was full of all kinds of grammatical and editorial mistakes (I still liked the book). Could this be an uncorrected proof?

Is your "We Have Capture" hardcover or softcover? If the earlier, then it is not an uncorrected proof.

Advance reading copies, galleys and uncorrected proofs are softcover bound and usually have the words "Advance reading copy" or "Uncorrected proof" on their cover or inside, along with a disclaimer that the copy is for review only. The publisher's contact information is also usually included.

Either I'm going to kick myself somewhere or I need glasses. My copy of "Light This Candle" has "Uncorrected Proof" printed on the cover!

Interesting to see how some of those books differ from the final versions. And of course if whole chapters are deleted before being printed, I understand why you would want to collect such books.

Thanks Robert; it's a hard copy; just with lots of errors.

All times are CT (US)
