Any idea if it's possible to get hold of any news reports following the launch of Sputniks 1/2/3? Do any exist?
I have a couple of short pieces from Radio Moscow, but that's all.
In 1977 there was a BBC report featured on a 20th anniversary programme. I've still got it (of course!), but I'm almost certain it was a "re-creation".

Can anyone help?

Colin.

Are you just looking for radio coverage? If not, I would recommend the following:

Newspaper Coverage
On the New York Times web page there is a search engine that will scan every story in the paper since 1851. For a price, you can read and save them as pdf files. They have several price options. Depending on how many stories you want to view, most end up costing you several dollars per story, but it’s cheaper in bulk. It’s free if you are a NY Times subscriber.

Video News Clips
The University of San Diego maintains the archives for Universal International newsreels. These are film news clips that used to be shown in movie theaters before the movie. How many of us here on cS remember those? If you visit their web page at http://history.sandiego.edu/gen/newsreels/ you’ll see that they have put select clips onto CDs. As you might expect, Sputnik 1 coverage is included. Here’s the CD you’ll want:

“1957/10/07 New Moon. Reds Launch First Space Satellite (1) first report of Sputnik - animations of rocket used same animations as done for earlier report on the Vanguard story (partial newsreel) SOURCE: 200 Universal 30-82, National Archives, College Park MD”

However, it’s fun to browse through their list of prepared CDs because a number of them include space stories. The CD’s are then ordered from the university bookstore. I bought one of these a few years ago, but forget what the price was, around $20, I think. Everything in this archive is in the public domain.

Thanks for the info, Chris. Yes, I've got those. I stupidly forgot to mention that I'm looking for actual radio reports (BBC News etc) - or indeed any audio from TV news. Actual news bulletins.

You might like to know that I've finally found an actual radio news bulletin from the night of the Sputnik 1 launch - and there's several minutes of it!!!From Canadian radio:

Give it a whirl, and take yourself back to the day the Space Age began.

Colin,

Thanks for sharing this treasure. It really does seem like more than 50 years ago, a glimpse into another age.
