Subscribed to this magazine for 10 issues after a visit to Kennedy Space Centre, July 2005, but have had no publications and unable to get response from publisher in TXS. Does anyone know anything? Rgds. Doug

You know, it strikes me as if resurrecting something like this should be a total no-brainer. I would expect that one of the organizations down at the Cape that already covers launchers could do this easily. Why not Florida Today? SpaceflightNow.com has people (well, at least a _person_) covering the launches there.

All they would need to do is convert their regular stories into something aimed at the launch, then print and distribute it. There's no shortage of talent who could do it; the big hurdle is the printing and distribution.

The magazine is no longer being published. I contacted the editor at the phone number on the magazine and spoke to him a few times. I would try contacting him and hopefully he will be able to answer your questions. Thank you.

Dwayne,

I agree- but who's going to finance it? The Internet gives no reason (well, I don't agree but I guess that's the rationale behind it) to publish something in hard copy when you can get online. There may not be a market for this, costs too high (printing, shipping) and so forth. And there are already a few publication- which I subscribe to because I prefer paper (call me old-fashioned) than electronic format. Paper is alive. With no electricity, the internet becomes by definition useless.

Isn't there a fledgling magazine called "Launch" out there somewhere?

No need to convince me about paper. Paper is currently pushing me out of my living space. Too many books and magazines and documents.

As for your question, my point of bringing up existing organizations is that this is the way for them to save money. They don't need a separate organization, they can reprint their existing materials and reuse their talent.

Clearly there is _some_ market for this kind of publication, primarily down at the Cape itself during launches. They sell them in gift shops and things like that. Is there sufficient market to cover the expenses? Dunno. But that's why I proposed methods of bringing down the expenses.

Liftoff was a victim to circumstances outside their control. The editors had just begun entering into partnerships and expanding their magazine's format when Columbia was lost. As they only published when a mission was upcoming, that left them with essentially no business for more than two years.

When STS-114 launched, Liftoff re-debuted with a larger format, higher quality publication but without the previous years' income sustaining their expenses, they relied on Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to justify their cost of publishing. After STS-114 though, KSCVC, for whatever reason, decided not to further order the magazine and despite other retailers interest (including our own), Liftoff was too expensive to continue.

Dwayne,

I'm running out of shelf space too! That's one advantage to the electronic format (but when you look at those awful and huge pdf documents available on some servers, I prefer paper). But I'm no writer and/researcher! :-)
But you're probably right, there must be a market for it. At least in France there is. There is a great publication (my opinion), space-related articles only, originally 6 issues/year, 100p. on glossy paper. Really great. Now they moved to 8 issues per year due to increased sales/subscriptions. For those interested: http://www.espace-magazine.net/

(I don't have any financial interest in this publication).

Chris.
