Pyramid Design announced the release of a new version of its popular space simulator, A-OK! The Wings of Mercury for Windows XP and Mac OS X, bringing this technically and historically accurate simulation to the Windows platform for the first time.

In addition to being available on Windows, A-OK! The Wings of Mercury 3.5 also features the following improvements:

  • New Mercury, Redstone and Atlas vehicle 3D models
  • New Redstone and Atlas launch facility 3D models
  • Improved program performance and frame rate
  • New cloud generation
  • Freedom 7 capsule now available for suborbital missions
"We have received thousands of requests for a Windows version of A-OK! The Wings of Mercury." states Joe Nastasi, president of Pyramid Design. "By applying the technology we are developing for future products, we are not only able to move satisfy those Windows, but bring vast improvements to the Mac OS X platform as well."

Customer Eric Deem had this to say after receiving the new version: "Just got the software via snail mail...what can I say. AWESOME! Having a blast(off)!" Version 3.0 customer Kevan Austin: " Just a note, the simulation is great!"

Armchair astronauts can download and try either the Windows XP (42mb) or Mac OS X (42mb) demo version for free. The full version is delivered on CD-ROM, which includes both Windows XP and Mac OS X versions and a bonus folder of historic Project Mercury Documents in PDF format. Orders include updates through 3.9. No new CD-ROM is required; updates can be downloaded from the web site.

A-OK! The Wings of Mercury 3.5 is available for $49.95, plus shipping.

Order information and screen shots are available here.

Have any cS Mac users tried out the earlier versions? If so, were you pleased with the sim?

I just tried the Windows version. It's great!

One annoying thing however is that on several PC's that I have tried it on the computer starts to search for a diskette in the floppy drive every time another image is loaded or when you use the shift-key (to close a panel). And that's very very often! I'll wait until that's solved before buying...

Looks fantastic for the rest!

I tried this here as well:

System: IBM Thinkpad A31p 1.8GHz
Operating System: Win 2K SP4
NASA spec ISS/Shuttle laptop

The A: floppy ran like every time I touched a panel. Dialog Box? was black. Link to online Flight manuals did not work.

I can tell that once the bugs are worked out this looks to be a great sim. I'll just wait a while longer (we've waited years for a PC version what's a few more months?)

As one of the beta-testers for this program, I can see your first error, that being your operating system: Win 2K SP4

I tested the program on my system, which uses Windows XP, SP1 - SP2 was not installed. The program ran fine.

One hint, as with all graphics intensive programs, I highly recommend extra memory, and a killer video card... trust me, it is worth it.

Hi Eric, I tested on 3 different machines. Two running Win-XP and one even running Win98.

They all have the same problem (the win 98 actually has more besides this one): almost continuously trying to access the floppy drive. Doesn't sound to me like a problem with too little memory...

Well, I don't know what to tell you. I never had a problem with the program attempting to access the A: drive.

By the way, two updated versions of WOM have been posted since its release on the WOM webpage. Those updates address issues such as joystick interfaces, sound problems. Have you downloaded one of those updates yet?

I'm running version 3.5.1.b2

Just the version that I downloaded some day's ago. Haven't updated yet, but isn't this the latest?

By the way, have to tell also that besides the annoying Floppy drive it's a SUPER program!

UPDATE: Okay, I just uploaded Windows XP service pack 2. Still have not had any problems with W.O.M.

If you have a bug, please use this link.

Joe has given the best support of any software developer out there. He does want to hear of any bugs that y'all may find, and, that we beta-testers did not catch! Since there are so many different computers with varying configurations, it is about impossible to catch every bug.

Hi Folks,

I'm the guilty party (uh, developer :-) of A-OK! The Wings of Mercury. First, my sincere thanks to all that have tried the program, bought and/or participated in beta tests.

The program's code is pretty old. Therefore, we're on a major quest to fix bugs and improves quickly. We are now beta testing version 3.7, so we are averaging an upgrade every other month.

RE: the floppy search. This one has eluded us because it does not happen on any of our Windows box. We're trying to arrange more test equipment, but being a very small company, it takes some time.

We are very dedicated to getting the product up to speed., and as Eric said, are interested in your comments.

Thanks
