Per a May 6, 2009 solicitation record issued by NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Robert McCall will be painting a portrait of Neil Armstrong.
NASA/DFRC has a requirement for an oil painting on canvas of Neil Armstrong.

The specifications are: (1) One (1) each: The artist will prepare a prototype study/concept sketch for approval of content and concept prior to executing the large oil painting. (2) One (1) each: The artist will deliver one large oil painting on canvas, approx. 5ft in height and 6 ft in width of Neil Armstrong.

Sole Source Explanation:

NASA/DFRC intends to purchase the item from Dr. Robert T. McCall. Dr. McCall has the unique expertise as a renowned artist and is a pre-eminent expert in communicating NASA Agency themes. He has been chosen as an artist for NASA, documenting the progress of American space history. Dr. McCall has done several other large paintings that are currently on display at this center, the Pentagon, the National Air and Space Museum, Johnson Space Center, and many others. He has technical familiarity with the subject matter and it establishes visual continuity with present works at NASA-DFRC.

Moments after unveiling a new mural by noted aviation artist Robert McCall depicting former NASA astronaut and research pilot Neil Armstrong, new NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden discussed his goals and hopes for the nation's aerospace agency during a town hall with employees of NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center Oct. 30.

I endorse an earlier posting asking about a limited edition print. I think there would be a lot of interest, and even better if it could generate funds for a deserving cause.

5'x'6 is a pretty small "mural" for Bob McCall. Typically, he uses scaffolding to paint a mural.

A print of this image is a great idea. And I agree, McCall is amazing.

I need a closer view of Neil's face to make my opinion, though the rest of the drawing is pleasant to the eye.

I spoke today with Dryden's external affairs manager, Cam Martin, about the painting.

The 80- by 56-inch framed mural will be hung in Dryden's headquarters building. At this time, additional use of the image is to be determined.

As to the availability of prints, Robert McCall retains ownership of the image he painted; NASA has a royalty-free license to use it within the agency. The painting is not public domain (which is why, at present, there are no larger or unobstructed images of the painting available).

Beautiful art as always from Mr. McCall.

Does anyone else see a crucifix pattern? The X-15 is behind Armstrong at shoulder height and he's looking straight ahead. The cross imagery shows up in some of McCall's other work, too. Also interesting that the LM above Armstrong's head looks almost like a crown, or the LM exhaust plume like a light shining down from Above.

You might be reading a little too much into it, although I can see a bit of what you are saying.

I think the reason for the parallels probably has to do with its resemblance to renaissance art as one tended to see some similar patterns there and those tend to have a timeless quality. Since McCall is a classically trained artist, I can see similar themes in his stuff. Art history shows other similar themes as well. The alignment of the Earth and Moon to me remind me of 2001 to a certain extent with the Jupiter and monolith alignment (which he did promo artwork for).

One thing I do like here is the X-15 is bigger then the LM and the LM is in flight. It emphasizes Armstrong the test pilot, not the first man to walk on the moon. Perfect artwork for Dryden IMHO.

All times are CT (US)
