A new set of DVD's (NASA - 50 years Space Exploration) has just been released down here (5 DVD's x $3 USD each) .... only five years after it made its debut in the States .... can't say we don't keep up with what's goin' around. Killing my sarcasm for a minute, $15 for all five is still a pretty good deal.

My question concerns the material .... it looks suspiciously like a repackaged "NASA 25 years" 5 x DVD set.

Can anybody out there in cS advise ??

Thanks Mike

I cannot answer your question. But I will say that I have been very disappointed with these compilation sets. The quality is awful. The transfers are bad, the menus often make no sense, etc.

I keep hoping that somebody will at least take all of the Apollo mission documentaries (each about 28 minutes long) and put them on a DVD--but using high quality originals. I still have these on tape and they're pretty good, but I long for a DVD.

Sorry if this is sidetraking this, but it was 50 years ago, July 5th, That Sam Phillips recorded Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore,Bill Black
singing "That's Alright Mama" at Sun Memphis Recording Service, igniting the early stages of Rock 'n Roll. Thank ya very much.

Beware anything put out by Madacy. Usually bad quality, with compression artifacts everywhere.

Thanks for the responses. Yep, looks like it's a repeat (for the most part) of the original 5 disc set.

This DVD set (five DVDs, 11hrs 30mins running time)is on sale in HMV shops for £9.99. Have any British CS contributors bought it? What's on the DVDs? Some earlier posts suggest it might be one to avoid, but maybe this is an improved version using the PAL system? I'm tempted but I would welcome any comments from anyone who has recently bought it. Does it contain the "official" NASA films of each Apollo mission?

Now that this post has been resurrected, here are the contents of the 5 Australian DVD's taken directly from the seller's website .... sounds like the same as the UK edition

# 1

Follow man's footsteps of space exploration through these rare film archives. Alan Shepard's historical first flight into space in 1961, John Glenn's "Project Mercury" in 1963 and the Gemini Missions. Finally watch Neil Armstrong's famous walk on the surface of the moon in the awe of the entire world. And this was 1969 and only the beginning of man's conquest of space.

# 2

In this intriguing documentary we continue our space exploration as we follow the Apollo missions from Apollo 11 through to 17. We are now in the 70's & the moon missions are quite regular, but not without the potential of disaster. Re-live moment by moment Apollo 13's terrifying ordeal. Then watch as the Americans unite with the Russians for the Apollo-Soyuz mission.

# 3

The Space Shuttle. Without a doubt one of NASA's greatest achievements. This vehicle could lift heavy payloads into orbit, provide a lab for carrying out scientific research in space, provide a platform for satellite retrieval & repair, as well as returning people & payloads back to Earth!

# 4

January 28 1986.
The day the world watched in horror as space shuttle Challenger explodes! The following documentary ids a history of the 1986 51-L Space Shuttle Mission. It was prepared by the photo & tv support team of the 51-L Data & Design Analysis Task Force, and documents the task force's activities & findings. The 31 minute tape provides a concise technological explanation of the cause of the Challenger accident. Also included is a spectacular celebration of NASA's first 25 years of the space program. Featuring an amazing montage of video clips.

# 5

In this DVD our space exploration continues as we visit the International Space Station and learn about the "Eyes In The Sky"; Galileo, Ulysses & the Magellan missions. Then we witness John Glenn's famous return to space in 1998. Also, an in-depth look at the Hubble Space Telescope as it unveils a universe never before seen by human eyes. To Mars & beyond, see NASA's plans for future space travel with the Aerospace Plane.

.... and more good news .. the sales of these are so bad down here that they've dropped the price to (equivalent of) $10 USD ... for ALL five discs.

Hi you all,
At last all the 5 have been viewed.
IN MY OWN OPINION-HUBBY AND MYSELF FOUND THIS SET NOT A WASTE OF MONEY
-----------------------------
for £9.99 this was in our view very interesting, footage we had never seen before-although it was re-done.In all-the look into NASA-and its archives, even though most of it was black\white-well worth watching,A GREAT ASSET TO MY COLLECTION.-with fond memories of Astronauts and moonwalkers we have met.
