I have been corresponding recently with former McDonnell engineer H.H. ('Luge') Luetjen in regard to his work on the Mercury capsules for a new book I am writing, and though he's not well enough these days to assist me, he said I could use whatever material I needed from a book he had published back in 2001 and again in 2004 titled, "Before Mercury Rose: The Half-Life of an Ex-Spaceman."The book is available online but at a hideously high price (plus high postage). I am wondering if anyone out these has a copy and might be willing to scan just a few pages for me? It would help quite a lot in putting this new book together. |

I went to abebooks.com and found a signed copy for a reasonable price. |

Thanks Jurg; I'll keep an eye out as it's not urgent just yet. It's not so much the $50 they want, it's the $25 postage to Australia that adds to making it rather expensive. |

My wife was his admin assistant for the latter part of his career. I have the book and have conversed with him a few times. In addition to being the launch conductor for the Mercury spacecraft, another of his claims to fame is that he hired Gunter Wendt. The book has many pictures of him interacting with the Original Seven and even talking to JFK. |

Could I just thank our Scottish contributor Cameron (who goes by the collectSPACE name of "medaris"). He saw my post about this book, got in touch off-forum, and went out of his way to assist me. In order to preserve the integrity of the spine of his copy of the book he photographed all the relevant pages and sent me scans. I'm very grateful to Cameron, and it once again proves the tremendous enthusiasm and support of our wonderful collectSPACE people. |
