Partnership in Space: The Mid to Late Nineties
by Ben Evans
April 12, 2011 was the 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's pioneering journey into space. To commemorate this momentous achievement, Springer-Praxis has produced a mini-series of books that reveals how humanity's knowledge of flying, working, and living in space has grown in the last half century.

"Partners in Space" focuses on the early to late 1990s, a time in the post-Soviet era when relations between East and West steadily - though not without difficulty - thawed and the foundations of real harmony and genuine co-operation were laid for the first time with Shuttle-Mir and the International Space Station. This book explores the events which preceded that new ear, including the political demise of Space Station Freedom and the consequences of the fall of the Soviet Union on a once-proud human space program. It traces the history of "the Partnership" through the often traumatic times of Shuttle-Mir and closes on the eve of the launch of Zarya, the first component of today's International Space Station.

It was signed off by the author/editor some time ago and is now somewhere in Springer's system.

I emailed the "Springer System" because the retail price is now....$186, hoping that's a typo (I pre-ordered mine for $33.08! from amazon).

No word from Springer (not really surprising) but Amazon also gives a list price of $186...but you can pre-order for $33.74! That's probably the largest discount I've ever seen on Amazon!

Too late. Now you can pre-order for $50.34.

Still no answer from Springer regarding the retail price of this final volume ($189).

This isn't the last volume — this series is a pentalogy in six parts.

According to the preface of volume 4, agreement was reached to extend the series by a further volume to allow it to be completed with the same amount of detail as it started.

Okay, my mistake. Thanks for the info. And the latest volume will fetch for what, $250?

I fail to see the logic — if there's one — in the pricing of the series and compared to other Springer-Praxis space exploration books.

Needless to say that nobody (from Springer) cared to explain the retail price for this volume. On the other hand, all pictures are in color...

All times are CT (US)
