"Many thanks, Scott. I'm doing everything I can to make the book into what it deserves to be. Best, Jim"I thought it was nice of him to get back with me. |

Mr. Hansen should have been at the 100 yr Inventing Flight Dayton celebration event over the past weekend, when clearly Neil exhibited behavior that indicated serious mental health problems (I'm not a DR. nor profess to be.)If the 13 year old "whose head was chewed off" by Neil in a safe and isolated environment would have been mine Neil would of had a knuckle sandwich.... DO NOT have illusions of Neil signing for this biography. He is a very odd oddball, even in one on one situations away from anyone....! YES, I was present, unfortunately, his father was not at that location but there, and yes I had met Neil previously, with the same description you had used. BUT he is a totally different character in a group of people NOT at the event or in an isolated area away from anyone else. Very disturbing & I thought a whole day before posting. "The truth shall set you free" Neil is a very different person now. Forget about him signing the biography. We all need a reality check about this new Neil.....[This message has been edited by Wehaveliftoff (edited July 21, 2003).] |

That doesn't sound like the Neil I met at the Seattle Air Races less than a year ago. At the end of the evening's gala, when there were only a handful of people left in the room, I approached Neil about signing my book. While he declined, he did so with a smile on his face and in a very pleasant manner. I've seen him at a few other events, and the only time I saw him become mildly upset was when someone wouldn't take "no" for an answer.Just curious, but your use of quotes makes me ask: were you present at this confrontation or were you told about it? |

Wow. That's troubling. Please tell more. What did Armstrong say? |

I am not a gossip columnist, but have reported in a truthful manner based on numerous observations (afar & close by) of Neil this weekend. I was not privy to a red ticket for behind the curtain of the afterparty though.

Hi - I was lucky to attend the two events this week-end in Dayton and on both nights Mr Armstrong very kindly agreed to pose for a picture. I did not ask him for his autograph, but I saw him politely decline to two young people. I am not aware of any particular problem.. Frederic Janik |

I think the key points to consider are, was the 13 year old kid who approached Neil a true child with an interest in getting something signed for his own starry eyed brush with greatness; or was he a "professional" autograph seeker or someone acting FOR a professional. These guys can spot the scams a mile away. If that was not the case, then could it be possible someone caught Neil in a bad time/situation? As big a hero as he is to all of us, he is still a human. And lets face it, the most sought after human around. He never has a normal day. Ever. I think he deserves some slack. As nice as he was during an entire weekend of being mobbed, I would have to believe there was some causative factor that brought this on. |

I looked up his email address at his school and sent him an email. I told him congratulations on being selected and that I would want to read his book when it came out. |
