I have been giving away Gemini pens to my colleagues to give to their kids. One colleague asked me for a recommendation about a book on the Gemini program that would be suitable for her 6-10 year old grandchildren. She had done a quick search and found on the "Shoulders of Titans." I told her it would be a little too difficult for her grand kids. So my question to the community is: are there any age (6-10 year old) appropriate books about the Gemini program that I could recommend to my colleague? |

I haven't read it, but Paul and Diane Sipiera of the Planetary Studies Foundation have a book through Scholastic, Project Gemini, that is intended for ages 7 and up. Project Gemini prepared NASA to send astronauts to the Moon with Project Apollo. The knowledge gained and lessons learned from these manned missions helped the United States gain control in the space race. Less conventionally, there is astronaut Mark Kelly's Astrotwins: Project Rescue, which while fictional, involves Gemini history: While staying in the countryside at their grandfather's house with their friend Jenny (aka Egg), the twins repurpose a NASA Titan 2 rocket ship being stored nearby. Complete with spacesuits and snacks, the twins take off on their rescue mission. Will they ever see their family or their grandfather's backyard again? (Note: the book description mentions an Apollo command module, but the cover art and the book itself is about a Gemini spacecraft.) |
