Astronaut Scholarship Foundation release
Calling All Space Fans! After four successful years of producing the Astronaut Autograph Club (AAC), the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is turning to its supporters for 2008 AAC edition ideas!

Submit your ideas in the 2008 AAC online essay contest for a chance to help shape the new club and win great prizes! The contest begins today and closes midnight on August 10, 2007. Contest entries will be reviewed by a committee and one or more ideas will be selected as winners.

The Astronaut Autograph Club provides members a signed astronaut photograph and personalized letter for each month of the year. All proceeds go directly to fund scholarships for exceptional college students pursuing degrees in science or engineering.

Visit the ASF website to access the contest form and details or to order your AAC membership today. Good luck!

I suggest having Gemini crews such as Borman and Lovell (Gemini 07) sign autographed photos of their respective missions.

I sent my idea in. As I read the other ideas, it seemed to me that they were asking some impossible things. There seems to be a common request to have Neil Armstrong involved and I don't think that would ever happen. There are also ideas for multi-signed photos each month and some themes that have no possibility of having photos signed at all. I think we should focus on what is possible and not on what we really would like to have without spending a great deal of money.

Some of the suggestions are a little out there. I think current astronauts can not participate in fundraising so that would negate them.

Some of the ideas are good. I look forward to seeing who wins.

And the winner is...

"After much consideration, the Foundation chose William McKay's submission of inspiring future generations. He suggested that the astronaut's accompanying letter detail their personal story as to why they chose to become an astronaut. The 2008 AAC will feature twelve hero astronauts from the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Space Shuttle programs."

I hope everyone takes advantage of the club this year. I am not biased just because my son Will won the contest but they put out some great photos and do a great service service with the scholarships. i have met a few of the scholarship winners and they are bright, nice young men and women.

I am looking forward to this years letters and photos.

I've been a member of the AAC since 2005 and can honestly say its a joy to have a pristine new signed photograph (and personalized letter) arrive each and every month.

The January 2008 installment arrived today and is a great photograph of "Hoot" Gibson sitting at the controls of the orbiter.

I would recommend joining the AAC to ANYONE.

Merry Christmas, Derek

I agree. Nice photo and the model of the shuttle signed by Crippen was a nice touch as well.

Thanks Paul. I'm hoping in the next few days the John Glenn signed October 2007 installment will arrive. There was a delay because there were some photos not signed by Senator Glenn.

Because I'm paying for the subscription monthly I get my Shuttle model at after the last payment has been made. I can't wait to display the model on my desk!!

Best regards, Derek

My wife managed to hide the signed orbiter model from me until Christmas morning. Fortunately, I didn't read any posts until Christmas day. It goes well with the Crippen signed full stack shuttle model that I bought from AAC at the autograph show at the Cape in June.

Hi all, I just wanted to thank all of you for bringing this good cause to my attention. I just signed up last week, and received my first selection today. I can't wait to get next months. Unfortunately, I most likely won't be able to use the KSC tickets, but I may just take off during the next few weeks to shake off the sting of that playoff loss yesterday.

My February envelope arrived today - Charlie Duke on the lunar surface beside the rover, and inscribed 'Apollo 16 LMP'. I liked the text in the covering letter as well.

I couldn't agree more. The wording in the letter was really from the heart I thought and makes a wonderful accompaniment to the photograph.

AAC sends out another great autographed photo this month: I just received a beautiful pic of Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14) walking on the Moon. Great shot! I'm so glad I got into the AAC. Recommended for everyone.

Forgot to post this last week, but the recent autographed photo mailed out is a nice shot of Fred Haise in a spacesuit obviously training for the upcoming Apollo 13 flight. Glad to see he supports the AAC!

Being a bit new to space collecting I've only just found out about the Astronaut Autograph Club. Is this something you can join mid way through the way and get the items from early in the year backdated or is it better to wait till next year?

If you join now for 2008, you will get all of the ones already released, and then the ones for the remainder of the year will come once a month.

Also, you can buy every year's club offerings except for the first year, which is sold out.

I've been a member of AAC from the start and I do use the collection boxes they provide. I have a certain area in the house I can display these photos, but they can't all fit! So I "rotate" the display every 6 months or so, and visitors to my home always like to look there and see "what's new." I can use themes based on missions, programs, or whatever. I'd like to hear how other members display their collections.

Best regards,
Mark in Utah

Just a quick question this, I joined a couple weeks ago and last week Dee called confirming payment, I know I will get all the ones up till now and then one a month, does anyone know if they will send it now or wait till the next installment? I feel like a kid at christmas waiting! To be able to get that many Apollo Astronauts in 1 year to me is amazing and after all if they can support so can I!
Thanks in advance
Lou

Hi Lou,

I did a catch up mid way through a year and yes they sent the box with all the previous months when the current installment was due. Hang on it is worth the wait! I am on my 5th year and the staff at the ASF have been nothing short of fantastic... If funds permit, I would strongly recommend the previous years too... they go up in price each year that passes! Enjoy!!!

Yesterday I received the latest autograph, that of Bob Crippen. He's posed at the controls of Columbia. The letter is signed personally by him, not a photocopy. Great stuff!

This must be Bob Crippen Month. Ahead of schedule, the AAC has sent the model shuttle which is signed on the base by Bob Crippen. It looks great, and immediately went into my glass display case.

Looking closer at the shuttle model, I found it is the shuttle Atlantis. Funny, that. Don't believe that Crippen flew the Atlantis. (sigh) Oh well.

Just opened the latest delivery from AAC. There's a nice letter and photograph signed by Jeffrey Hoffman. The photo shows him floating in the shuttle on the Hubble rescue mission. Interesting how he has crafted his autograph to resemble the signature of an earthquake on a seismograph!

This month's astronaut selection from the ASF featured Dr. Hoffman, a veteran of five shuttle flights that included the first Hubble repair-servicing mission. While the glossy was indeed hand-signed by Hoffman, most (but not all) of the astronaut letters that are included with each photo are not. Concerning Hoffman's signature, it hasn't changed at all during the last 30 years or so.
