I've been enjoying collectSPACE now for not far off 20 years, but never felt the need to post.

Over that time I've written to lots of serving and retired astronauts, cosmonauts and personnel connected to the space programme. Had plenty of knock backs, but have had some great results, and now have a very treasured collection that may not be worth more than a few pounds (dollars for most of you!!) but is very important to me like a letter from Gene Kranz or inscription from the late Rick Husband. As such I have never even considered insuring them or any piece in particular.

I've recently moved house and my wife saw I had a frame containing Apollo 11 stuff. It had never been on the wall as we were living in rented accommodation. She asked if it was insured, I said no as I wasn't sure it was worth doing so... this is where I'm hoping you guys can offer advice.

It is the only item in my collection I didn't get myself. It came from my dad who wrote to NASA in the late 60's (what boy didn't?!). He wrote once, but didn't hear anything back so he wrote again saying how disappointed he was he hadn't heard anything. Within a few days he received a signed crew photo, I assume in response to his first letter. It is undoubtedly an autopen, but is a nice piece of history all the same. A month or so later my dad received a small piece of card, plain on the front seemingly signed by Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin.

I've never had it checked, but with my wife mentioning it I thought I'd actually see if it appeared genuine and therefore needed insuring. In many respects it's irrelevant what it's worth as it's family history that I'd like to pass on and is irreplaceable regardless of insurance or not.

All times are CT (US)
