NASA's second Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, N911NA or NASA 911, will be placed on public display at the Joe Davies Heritage Airpark in Palmdale, Calif., the Parabolic Arc blog reports. The 747, registration number N911NA, is now being stored at a NASA facility near the Davies Airpark. [NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center Director David] McBride said officials are working on a plan to safely tow it over to the display area. He expects the move to occur within the next three to four weeks.The shuttle carrier will go on display alongside a B-52, F-104, C-46 and other retired military aircraft. McBride said the 747 will be the largest aircraft displayed there. McBride said the aircraft will remain available to NASA for spare parts to support the SOFIA program, which uses a 747 as a flying observatory. That aircraft is based out of Palmdale. He added that although NASA does not plan any ceremony to mark the arrival of 747 at the airpark, McBride expects the city of Palmdale to hold an event. |

The younger of NASA's two modified-Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), known by its tail number N911NA, or NASA 911, was towed three-quarters of a mile (1.2 km) on Friday (Sept. 12) from an aircraft operations facility to the Joe Davies Heritage Airpark in Palmdale, California. The early-model airliner, distinguished by two large vertical fins attached to the ends of its horizontal tail, was parked next to a Boeing B-52D "Stratofortress" bomber on the west side of the outdoor aircraft museum. NASA 911 will now join the Airpark's other displays available to the public Friday to Sunday weekly.  |

Perfect place for 911. They have a lot of great aircraft out there to see, SR-71, A-12, D-21 Drone, And F-117 just to name a few. |

I thought NASA was going to keep N911NA for its SOFIA science program. |

As noted in the article and above, NASA 911 still belongs to NASA and "...will remain available to NASA for spare parts to support the SOFIA program, which uses a 747 as a flying observatory." |

Palmdale is about 30 to 45 minutes from Edwards AFB. It is not that far away. |

On Saturday (Feb. 20), I had the chance to see NASA 911 at the Joe Davies Heritage Airpark.The airpark also exhibits a NASA C-140 Jetstar and the Space Shuttle Escape System Test Vehicle.
