I wanted to share a special project I created and designed to honor the people involved in the race to the moon in both the US and USSR.

It's called Terra Luna Park and I created an information website about it at: terralunapark.org

A proposal for the park was sent to the Kansas Cosmosphere, which has been forwarded to their Revitalization Task Group for consideration.

The Cosmosphere is scheduled to release its future plans for the museum at the end of the first quarter of 2014. I hope Terra Luna Park is one of the projects that makes the cut!

It doesn't convey it well in the graphics (I'm not an artist) but the plan would be for the hand of the cosmonaut to be just under the Lunar Beacon but not quite touching it.

Symbolizing the fact that the Soviets were so close but didn't achieve the goal.

I've updated the Terra Luna Park website with some new graphics and information.

Also added a new section called AR Tech. It would use Augmented Reality technology to add an interactive element to the visitor's experience without changing the park's design.

The Cosmosphere has continued to express interest in the park. I'm hoping it's something that will move forward as we approach the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 in 2019!

I've launched a Kickstarter campaign for Phase 1 of Terra Luna Park - a monument to the people who worked on Apollo and the L1/N1-L3 programs.

The campaign is to fund a feasibility/cost study of the park and comes with some reward levels!

I really hope the park can become a reality. The people who worked on those programs really deserve a monument. Thanks in advance for checking it out!

The Cedar Rapids Gazette wrote a really nice article about Terra Luna Park!

Hopefully it will generate more interest in the park and backers of the Kickstarter campaign!

With all due respect, they were never close. Any attempt to portray them as such is a distortion of history.

Good luck with your venture but would leave the Kremlin's failures out of it.

There are a couple of reasons for the Soviet side of the park.

The Soviet program was able to accomplish a number of lunar firsts of its own. I believe the general public would enjoy learning about the other half of the race to the moon.

For example, look at the popularity of the Kansas Cosmosphere which has one of the best collections of US and USSR artifacts in the world. Also, the new Soviet space exhibit at the Science Museum in London, which includes an LK, has been extremely popular.

The other reason is the Space Race was the greatest competition in human history. I felt it was important to show respect for our competitor. And the Soviet lunar programs were a strong factor in America's ability to push itself to victory (particularly in the area of funding).
