What were the exact dates of construction of the Vertical Assembly Building (later Vehicle Assembly Building, VAB) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida?

When did construction start on the VAB and what day was construction completed?

The info you are looking for is likely to be found in these chapters of NASA's Moonport.

A quick look tells me that work began on 11 July 1963. It would be a shame not to read this yourself as its very interesting and there were a lot of milestones between beginning and end.

Here is a NASA article on current modifications to the VAB for the SLS program.

Notice in the first photo that there is a mission emblem for the STS-109 Hubble repair mission on the VAB wall near High Bay 3. Why that particular flight? Are there other emblems on the VAB walls?

Yes, there are a number of mission emblems. I believe they were added for the filming of "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" in 2010.

I like the banners they placed higher up in High Bay 3. Interesting comparison.

More emblems can be seen in this 2011 photo.

When I went to the Kennedy Space Center this week, I noticed the painted American flag on the side of the Vehicle Assembly Building is starting to wary; does anyone think it's time for NASA to repaint the flag?

One of my favorite reminders that the VAB is a living and constantly changing organism – I took these photos back in 2006.

A strange place for a door, perhaps NASA plans on using this to travel to another dimension. Or it's just a typical government building with a contract for a set number of doors.

Maybe it is the door seen between High Bay 1 and High Bay 3 in this Apollo 8
rollout photo
. There is some kind of wire coming out the door toward the ground.

Not really, there could have been a platform at that level for Apollo. Also, government contracts would not specific door numbers.

The particular door pictured doesn't lead to the outside of the building, but rather into offices and work areas. As Jim notes, it is a remnant of a prior platform level.
