I just stumbled across this image of what appears to be the Apollo 1 CM on display... somewhere? Is it real or a 'mock up'? I had always thought the CM was locked away at Langley.

The image is part of this blog on Gene Kranz.

On edit: It turns out the photo was copied from a 2010 collectSPACE post by GACspaceguy.

In actuality there is already an Apollo 1 display in the Tellus museum in Cartersville, north of Atlanta. This museum just opened last year and they have displayed the Apollo 1 model used in the filming of the HBO series "From the Earth to The Moon." It was displayed as a cutaway and showed the interior as it would have appeared after the fire.

As noted elsewhere on cS (I believe), the placards for that display do not do a great job of clearly explaining the nature of the prop. If I recall correctly, of the 3 panels of information, there is only one that explicitly states that this is a prop built for From the Earth to the Moon, and it is not the one under the hatch.

I don't think it's intentional on the museum's part, but it was confusing to other guests when I was last there. Though, it has been a couple of years, and they may have changed the display by now.

At any rate, prop or not, it's surprisingly chilling to peer in to. Certainly the closest any of us are likely to get to looking at the real thing.

And how many people will see this model from across the room or not bother to read what this model actually is and walk away from the exhibit thinking it is the real thing? Maybe unlikely, but I have heard some pretty wild comments/assumptions from people at museums.

I can hear it now, "I don't CARE what that book or website says, I know I saw the Apollo 1 capsule on display, I clearly remember seeing it!"

Actually, for years I thought I'd seen the real one myself when I was about 5 or so at Kennedy's visitor center in the early 70s. I realize now I was just noticing the burn marks on another capsule and my memory filled the rest in...

The Tellus museum isn't far from my house and I've been there several times. Most recently with Gilbert and another friend to see the Al Worden presentation and book signing. The museum itself has some very cool content but almost none of it resides in the Space section. The Apollo 1 spacecraft looks much better in the photos than in person.

A model built for the HBO miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon" (as noted above). The real Apollo 1 command module is at Langley Research Center.

All times are CT (US)
