Take a Peek in the New Mission Control Houston

Flight controller Bill Foster talks with NASA public affairs officer Josh Byerly about the enhancements and changes being made to Mission Control Houston.

The former control room for the space shuttle (White FCR) has been undergoing a remodel to prepare it for Orion flights, and it has a new look and feel.

Foster talks about the upgrades and what's ahead for the space station control room (FCR-1/MOCR-1) as well.

NASA redesigns Mission Control for future spaceflights

NASA's Mission Control is gaining a new "look and feel," trading the "big blue consoles" that were iconic during the space shuttle program for upgraded "clean" workstations.

The extensive improvements, which are now being tested in what was the flight control room (FCR) for the shuttles' final missions, are to prepare the Christopher C. Kraft, Jr. Mission Control Center (MCC) at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston for the space agency's next-generation spacecraft and missions.

"The control center itself is in a big evolutionary process where we are moving from the current architecture, which everybody is familiar with...into what we are calling MCC-21 or 21st Century Control Center," William Foster, ground control officer in Mission Control, said in a recent NASA interview.

Inside the MCC-21 renovated flight control rooms for NASA's Orion spacecraft

Mission Operations director Paul Hill, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and Johnson Space Center director Ellen Ochoa met with the media on Thursday (April 10) inside the newly renovated and historic "Blue" and "White" flight control rooms (FCR), which will be used to support the International Space Station and Orion spacecraft.

The mission patches that adorn the walls reflect the control rooms' previous use in the space shuttle and space station programs.

Space station flight controllers will temporarily move into the White FCR this fall for several months as the program's FCR is similarly upgraded. White FCR will then become the primary control room for NASA's Orion missions.

Orion's first mission, Exploration Flight Test-1 (EFT-1) scheduled for December 2014, will be controlled out of Blue FCR, the first room to receive the "MCC-21" modifications.

On Thursday, the EFT-1 controllers were running a simulation for the mission, which will send the uncrewed Orion 3,600 miles above the Earth for a two-orbit flight providing engineers the chance to verify the spacecraft's design and test some of the systems most critical for the safety of the astronauts who will fly on it in the future.
