I understand from the forums that pretty much all of the Downy site involved in the Apollo program has now been flattened for new development. However I was wondering if the old Consolidated Vultee/Convair offices were still in existence at 12214 N Lakewood? Will be over from the UK in early 2014 and it wouldn't be a huge detour to head past and see the site if it's still there, but would likely be a wasted trip if the site is entirely gone (The Challenger Memorial Center will be shut by the time I get there, ruling out a stop there). On a related note, are the old Apollo plaques still on the wall at Downey Landing? |

Do you know that building's building number? I have Images of Aviation: Downey's Aerospace History 1947-1999, which discusses the disposition of several buildings. It does say that Buildings 1, 6, and 290 are now Downey Studios (it notes that Building 1 was once a Vultee production facility). Twenty six buildings have been demolished and 23 building were still standing.Alternatively, you might check Google Maps, either the standard aerial, 45 degree, or street view to check things out. Regarding the Apollo plaques on the Downey Landing wall, there are photos in the book. Note that the book came out in 2009, so this may be dated information. |

Mike, thanks for your follow-up. The issue I have with Google Maps/Earth is that they still show, for example, Downey Studios to be standing, but I gather it was flattened in November last year. In July last year, they stated that "Crews will demolish most of the warehouse type buildings at the site, but they will save the office buildings along Lakewood Boulevard" but I was unsure if this was still the case, as these plans often change... | |
