Is it just me, or did they build the U.S. Space & Rocket Center's vertical Saturn V's nozzles bigger than were on the actual F-1 engines? I'd like to see someone's measurement of the mockup to compare it with the actual F-1.

The actual engine's diameter was 12.3 feet (presumably the exterior diameter and not the interior).

I left the museum questioning the size of the mockup due to this. Also, the gimballing of the actual F-1 had to allow for space between nozzles. A significant inaccuracy would be a disappointment to say the least.

I can tell you they were made out of a foam like material, because when I was there in May I jumped up to touch the bell of one. Plus there is plywood there too.

I meant to take a tape measure with me last night when I was up there, but just eyeballing it they looked about the same diameter.

All times are CT (US)
