I have plans to go to Lubbock, Texas this August and was hoping to get some insight about STS-107 pilot Willie McCool's hometown. I plan on visiting his statue, but are there any other places or museums that would be worthwhile?

There are several Buddy Holly sites to visit (it's his home town) -- his grave site is in Lubbock, as is a pretty cool statue.

Also, check out the Silent Wings Museum, located at the Lubbock International Airport (formerly South Plains Army Air Field, where the glider pilots were trained in WWII). The museum houses over 9,000 items not including photos and documents, and it also houses one of the very few CG-4A Waco gliders still in existence.

Have fun!

Thanks. I'll try to check it all out. Be nice to see a Waco glider. Saw one at the Yankee Air Museum in Michigan back in 2003 before it was lost in the hangar fire in 2004. Trip is my wifes business trip so I'll have plenty of time to kill just hope the heat doesn't kill me first.

All times are CT (US)
