Regarding the donation of shuttle items like trainers, mockups, etc., how will they move the space shuttle mockups that are in the Neutral Buoyancy Lab (NBL) and the ones at Johnson Space Center's Space Vehicle Mockup Facility (Building 9) that they use for escape training?

Also where is the Hubble mock-up they used in the NBL for the Hubble missions?

That trainer mockup at JSC should stay in the hangar until it can be moved across the away into the Space Center Houston facility.

All three trainers in the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility have already been assigned to museums other than Space Center Houston (National Air and Space Museum [CCT II], National Museum of the U.S. Air Force [CCT I] and Museum of Flight in Seattle [FFT]).

The same is true for the single system trainers and motion/static base simulators.

But how will they remove them especially the one in the NBL?

The NBL has cranes that are used to lift and lower mockups in the pool.

Buildings like the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility have large hangar doors through which the large trainers can be towed out (the SVMF also has overhead cranes).

Military Aerospace magazine reports that NASA, Texas A&M signed an agreement to move the space shuttle motion base simulator. Here's NASA's press release:
JSC, Texas A&M Mark Move of Space Shuttle Motion Simulator

NASA's Johnson Space Center and Texas A&M University will sign an agreement Dec. 19 to begin the move of the primary space shuttle launch and landing trainer, the Shuttle Motion Simulator, to College Station.

The NASA-Texas A&M partnership will allow the university to house and showcase unique space shuttle training artifacts. The Shuttle Motion Simulator provided a full-motion simulation of shuttle launches and landings for every crew that flew on the shuttle. It began operations at JSC in 1977 and was used in training for all 135 space shuttle missions.

The facility that housed the shuttle simulators at JSC continues to be used for International Space Station training. This partnership will help ensure that this unique historical artifact and the space shuttle training technology it represents is preserved and used to inspire future engineers. JSC welcomes opportunities for such partnerships that find areas of common interest of benefit to both parties.

The Space Act Agreement signing ceremony between Johnson Space Center and Texas A&M is this afternoon. collectSPACE will be represented and providing coverage afterwards.

By way of other status updates:

  • The shuttle payload bay mockup in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory has been removed from the pool, its parts placed outside the facility. The future disposition of these components has not yet been decided.

  • Crew Compartment Trainer-2, previously awarded to the Smithsonian, is now going to Space Center Houston for its new space shuttle gallery.

I remember reading recently that the CCT II trainer awarded to the Smithsonian was being 'loaned' back to Space Center Houston. I think SCH was going to try and couple their gantryway with the CCT for display purposes.

All times are CT (US)
