Does anyone have any photographs of the Gemini IV capsule display, when it was on display at the Arts and Industries Building? This would be after 1967 and before 1976? |

It is now known as "The Castle." It's the reddish looking building at the Mall in DC. |

It's actually not the Castle - that's the original Smithsonian building that has parapets like a castle. Arts and Industries (A&I) was the second Smithsonian building built. In the 1960's and early 1970's, the Air and Space Museum collection was split between the A&I building and a building somewhat like a hanger, which was in the area bordered by the Castle to the north, A&I to the east, and Independence Avenue to the south (now the site of the National Museum of African Art). Many of the ICBMs and other rockets that now stand in the NASM's east gallery were outdoors, along the west wall of the A&I building. When the "new" NASM building opened in 1976, the A&I building housed an exhibit of things from the original American Centennial celebration. I worked as a summer intern tour guide for the NASM in the A&I building in 1971 and 1972. I took a few photos in the museum one day before it opened and posted them in this thread. Unfortunately, I didn't get one of Gemini IV. If I recall correctly, it was the first exhibit in the left front of the entry foyer, just after you passed the information desk. |

All I have are two shots taken while it was on display at MSC in 1966. |

According to my recollection, the first time I saw vehicles from MGA in Washington was not in the castle, but in a hot un-air conditioned temporary Quonset hut style building somewhere on the mall circa 1972. The line was pretty long.I think they were the same vehicles now displayed in the Milestones of Flight gallery at NASM on the Mall. Namely, Friendship 7, Gemini 4, and Apollo 11. There may be photos or slides from that trip. But if so they're in a different U.S. state. |

There's a good two-page photo spread in 'NASM: An Autobiography' published last year that shows the Gemini in the A&I building circa 1973. It's on pages 226-227, and it's photo #SI73-4622. Couldn't find it online in the Smithsonian digital collection. |

Gemini IV was on display at the New York World's Fair in 1965, for a very short time. |
