I found the "Mousetrap" just recently by accident while taking my family to Cocoa beach pier and was able to get a pic in front of both the "Mousetrap" and the "Apollo Motel" plus they were on a list of what I wanted to do and find so it was quite a good outcome and still had a great day at Cocoa Beach. |

Stars and Stripes, the official newspaper of the U.S. Armed Forces, included mention of the re-opening in their July 8 article about the final space shuttle launch. In Cocoa Beach, a group of local business people plans to reopen a hotspot from NASA's mythical heyday in its original location later this month -- a restaurant and bar known as the Mouse Trap. Closed since the 1980s, the restaurant was once a hangout for astronauts and space workers from the Mercury program through the Apollo moon landing."We're bullish on the area," said Roger Dobson, a co-owner of the Mouse Trap building. "We wouldn't have signed a 20-year lease on it if we weren't." |

So, Durango's Steakhouse goes back to become The Mouse Trap? And maybe The Best Western reverts back to the Apollo Motel? Incredible! Oh the memories, the hangovers...LOL!! |

I ate at the Mousetrap last Saturday night (8/27). It seems they didn't open until Thursday 8/25.The first thing I noticed when I walked in was that the interior was pretty brightly lit, and that 90% of the space memorabilia was taken down off the walls. I did notice that the original logo of the mouse holding a martini was painted on several different walls. I was mistakenly given a lunch menu first. The cover had black and white photos of a Mercury/Atlas launch, a newspaper reporting Apollo 11, etc., and the sandwiches had names like "The Cape Canaveral". Since it was 8 pm, I asked for the dinner menu. The cover was similar, but the food items were higher priced (>$20) entrees and reasonably priced salads. The food was good. I asked the waitress about the space memorabilia. She said they still had it but decided not to put it all back up so it wouldn't look too "cluttered" (her words). Since she looked about 25 and said she'd just moved to the area in April, I didn't discuss it with her further as it was clear she really didn't care too much about the history of the restaurant. It seems to me that if your intention was to "re"-open a famous restaurant and use its classic name and location to evoke a tie to the "glory days" of the space race, you should do all you can to play that up... but since they've just opened, I look for it to continue to evolve into a more "historic" look. One more note: I saw Sy's comment above about the Best Western "reverting back" to the Apollo Motel... the Best Western today is where the Polaris Motel was. The original two story buildings of the Polaris' rooms are just part of the larger Best Western complex (they added several other larger buildings around the original ones to expand the property). |

The motel was the Polaris, not Apollo; it was just the two story buildings. |
