Is the X-15 in the National Air and Space Museum the one Neil Armstrong flew? If so, he may be one of the few pilots that have two spacecraft they flew in the museum.

Yes, Armstrong piloted the X-15 tail #66670 that is in the Smithsonian three times, 11/30/1960, 12/9/1960 and 07/26/1962. He also Piloted X-15 #3 four times for a total of seven X-15 flights. |

Thanks for that information. I don't know about everyone else, but to me that must be something to walk into a museum like that and see two major pieces of aviation history with your name attached to it. |

I have a real odd ball question. Are any of the suits that Armstrong wore on his X-15 flights on display? |

It seems to me that I was at a great lecture a year or two ago by Joe Engle at NASM in which he told us of the expansion joints in the X-15 and them immediately after the lecture we got to see the X-15 and the expansion joints. |

A couple years ago, there was a John Glenn lecture event at NASM featuring Neil Armstrong. I ended up with overflow seating which was in the main gallery where the X-15, Apollo 11 CM, and Friendship 7 are located. Glenn and Armstrong stopped in the overflow section to say a few words before moving on to the IMAX theater, and I recall thinking how great it was to have Armstrong and Glenn there in the same room with those historic spacecraft. |

Here are some cool indicators that were either intended for or originated from X-15 #3 (who knows Armstrong may have actually relied on one or more of them). |

At the San Diego Air and Space Museum in the X-15 display (not easy to photograph), next to one of Scott Crossfield’s flown X-15 suits, we have what our curators tell me is the air conditioning bag flown with Armstrong on the X-15. |
