I know a lot of you guys have visited the National Air and Space Museum a few times over the years. Does anyone have any photos they have taken of the Apollo Passive Seismic Experiment Package and the Laser Ranging Retro Reflector, that were/are standing in front of the Apollo 11 suits? (They were the Apollo 11 EASEP ones.)

Or if anyone is planning on visiting the museum in the near future would it be possible to take pics of some details for me? I would really like detailed images such as hinges, fittings, solar panels, gnomon, etc and general overall views.

Thanks for the kind words Adam! It was really a pleasure to help out a fellow collector. Plus I learned a lot more about the EASEP - an item to which I hadn't paid much attention in the past!

If anyone's interested, the ALSEP package from the (unflown) Apollo 18 is on display at the PHM Planetarium.

Thanks great Robert, cheers. It shows the LRRR sun compass and bubble level really well.

Interesting photo, Robert! The whole display has been rearranged with the LRRR tucked in behind the tool caddy now - that's why Adam didn't have a good shot of the left side of it. Now he does!

I haven't delved this deeply into any Apollo hardware for ages, not since I started reading the Apollo Spacecraft News References. These experiments are incredible pieces of engineering, they had to withstand the tremendous forces and vibrations of the journey to the moon, and still be able to deploy with the pull of a few rings!

Thanks to everybody who has contributed to my gathering of info, at has helped me understand these items much more than ever before.

P.S. Still keep it coming if you find anything new though!

The NASM Collections database is your friend.

That's a link to a search I did for 'bendix'; there are plenty of other science package photos in the database too. Some interesting pics showing the ALSEP in a bit of a mess at the time of accession.

All times are CT (US)
