The Da Vinci Experience is now open at the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

With some wonderful working models of da Vinci's engineering designs, which complement the aircraft and spacecraft very nicely. And those of you familiar with the Skylab II crew patch will also recognize a familiar image...

If you were here on opening night, you may have seen Bill Anders and his family wandering around (shown here with Museum President Jim Kidrick).

With many of you coming to town for Spacefest, I hope you'll visit us too!

Both Alan Bean and Jack Lousma of Skylab II were at an event at the museum the other night, and Jack Lousma re-enacted their da-Vinci-inspired Skylab II crew patch...

Not to be outdone, Al Bean toured the exhibition again yesterday and was sure to show us how to do the "Vitruvian Bean."

With some kind assistance from Robert Pearlman, who obtained a Richard Garriott patch personally from Richard, we are adding the following framed item to our Da Vinci Experience exhibition, showing da Vinci's artwork used in the mission patches of both father and son. Alan Bean kindly signed the framed item for us this weekend.

The JSC EVA Project Office uses (used?) a patch with a space-suited figure on it in a Vitruvian-man like pose. I've got the sticker version around somewhere, but no scans of it handy.

Indeed, there were at least three other NASA patches that have used the Vitruvian man, including a current one, if I recall right. I believe Robert has images of them all and might want to post them? Cool that da Vinci's art is being used all these centuries later, in space (plus, of course, the 'Leonardo' element of the space station).

I know the STS-40 crew patch incorporated it into the design. Besides the EVA patch, what's the third? - the Constellation EVA patch?

This one.

Plus, with Richard Garriott's patch, and the two unofficial Skylab / ISS wives patches, that would bring us up to seven da-Vinci-related patches that I know of.

Was a patch ever created for the ISS's Leonardo module?

To the best of my knowledge, there is no specific Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) logo, only insignia for the MPLM project.

Technically, Leonardo is not an ISS module -- at least not yet. When and if NASA makes the decision to leave Leonardo at the station with the final shuttle mission, then perhaps a Leonardo-specific patch might be created as part of its conversion from an MPLM to a Permanent Logistics Module (PLM).
